Hydropower Worldwide, an installed capacity of 777 GW supplied 2998 TWh of hydroelectricity in 2006. 20% of the world's electricity, and accounted for about 88% of electricity from renewable sources.

Auburn and surrounding area: accessible hydro power important aspect in early development (“Fall line”) First hydro electric plant: Appleton, Wisconsin, 1882, two years after Edison demonstrated incandescent lighting to the public. 12.5 kW. Largest: Three Gorges Dam complex in China. 25,615 MW (completion in 2011).
