3. Purpose Colorado State University (CSU) is committed to developing excellent and effective leaders that will have an impact on our society. The Rams Engaging in Active Leadership (REAL) Certificate program is designed to fulfill CSU’s commitment to our student body. The REAL Experience allows participants to advance their own knowledge with regard to effective, intellectual, and cultural leadership. In addition, this co- curricular certificate program will also prepare and develop participants to be more productive thinkers and to become more civically engaged. The REAL Experience is offered through the completion of various workshops, levels, and certificates. This experience is tailored to meet the interests, needs, and goals of each participant. REAL provides all interested CSU students with an accessible opportunity to develop and enhance a personal philosophy of leadership that includes an understanding of self, groups, and their community. REAL offers various opportunities for students to reflect upon and develop attitudes, knowledge, and skills related to ethical leadership development and practices.

6. Level I - Foundations Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate This certificate focuses on the development of basic leadership definitions, ideas, theories, and individual development. This certificate clarifies the roles of leadership and interactions that occur within the individual, the leader, followers, and situations. Requirements: 1.Complete (1) REAL Experience Orientation 2.Attend Five (5) Foundation Workshops – Three (3) Core Level I REAL Foundation Workshops – Two (2) additional REAL Foundation Workshops, which can include any workshops identified as Level I on the semester schedule 3.Complete eight (8) hours of community engagement volunteer hours 4.Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experience (Included in Certificate Completion form)

7. Requirements: 1.Complete (1) REAL Experience Orientation 2.Attend Five (5) Foundation Workshops Three (3) Core Level I REAL Foundation Workshops Two (2) additional REAL Foundation Workshops, which can include any workshops identified as Level I on the semester schedule 3.Complete eight (8) hours of community engagement volunteer hours 4.Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experience (Included in Certificate Completion Form) Workshop examples: Leadership Models, Dress for Success, Personal Well-being, Time Management, Professionalism, Resumes 101, Successful living, Basic Communication skills, Diversity 101, Organizing, Understanding Values, and many more… Volunteer Hours: This option leaves open for participants to choose their own 8 hour project(s) Level I - Foundations

8. Level II - Skills Leadership Skills & Professional Enhancement This area will focus on building upon the basic experience learned through the foundations level. This level will allow participants to gain a stronger understanding of their current skills and how to utilize them. In addition, this level will allow participants to expand upon their current skill level as well as gain new proficiencies for effective application. Requirements: 1.Complete Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate requirements (Level I – Foundations) 2.Attend five (5) Leadership Skills workshops – Three (3) Core Level II Skills & Professional Enhancement Workshops – Two (2) additional REAL Skills & Professional Enhancement Workshops, which can include Capstone Level II or other workshops identified as Level II on the semester schedule 3.Complete eight (8) hours of community engagement volunteer hours 4.Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experience (Included in Certificate Completion Form)

Requirements: 1.Complete Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate Requirements (Level I – Foundations) 2.Attend five (5) Leadership Skills Workshops Three (3) Core Level II Skills & Professional Enhancement Workshops Two (2) additional REAL Skills & Professional Enhancement Workshops, which can include Capstone Level II or other workshops identified as Level II on the semester schedule. 3.Complete eight (8) hours of community engagement volunteer hours 4.Complete a 500-word reflection paper on workshop and service experiences (Included in Certificate Completion Form) Volunteer Hours: This option leaves open for participants to choose their own 8 hour project(s) Workshop examples: Facilitation, Goal Setting, Time Management, Effective Communication, Public Speaking, Ethical Decision Making, Diversity within ourselves and others, Professionalism in the Workplace, Group Dynamics, Dealing with Difficult Customers, Motivating Others, Assertive Communication, Conflict Resolution, Humor in the Workplace, Customer Services, and many more… Level II - Skills

10. Organizational Leadership This area of development will allow individuals to learn how to effectively utilize their proficiencies gained from Level I and Level II to apply towards organizational, group, and team development. Social Justice Leadership This area of development is an opportunity designed to fortify participants in leadership roles here on campus and beyond, to focus on shared experiences and to critically examine various issues and isms that relate to living in a multicultural and diverse community. The ultimate goal is to give students the skills to act on the issues and causes they are most passionate about to become agents of social change. Community Engagement Leadership This area of development will allow individuals to understand what it means to take an active role within and outside of their communities. This opportunity will allow participants to address issues that they observe are affecting our society. Through this interest level, participants will learn how to mobilize resources and influence systems. Outdoor Adventure & Environmental Justice Leadership This area of development is an opportunity designed for participants to gain a stronger understanding in the areas of environmental education, environmental leadership, group processing, and team dynamics. This area allows for individual development that tailors to the interest areas for each participant. Participants can receive a certificate in any or all of the interest areas by completing the requirements listed. Level III – Interest Areas Requirements: 1.Complete Level I & Level II 2.Attend 5 Workshops each in two specific interest area 3.Attend 1 reflection session focused in each specific interest area 4.Complete 8 hours of volunteer/engagement hours focused in each specific interest area

11. Completion Certificate Form This form must be submitted after completion of each level You can find this form at www.REAL.colostate.edu www.REAL.colostate.edu We recommend filling this form out as you go. Level IV – Final Certification A REAL CSU Student Leader A REAL CSU Student Leader Certificate completion recognizes those student leaders at CSU who have committed to excellence of learning and commitment to themselves and our community as a whole. Students who complete this certificate have a clearer understanding of who they are, how they may impact our community, and have taken an active role in engaging our community through workshops, engagement volunteer hours, leadership roles, and experience participation.

13. Level IV – Final Certification Requirements: 1.Complete Personal Foundation of Leadership Certificate requirements (Level I – Foundations) 2.Complete Leadership Skills and Professional Enhancement Certificate requirements (Level II – Skills) 3.Complete at least two (2) - Interest Area Certificate requirements (Level III – Interest Areas) 4.Participate in one of the following leadership experiences offered by CSU: Campus Step-Up (Spring), LeaderShape (Spring), Orientation Leader Class (Spring), Resident Assistant Class (Spring) or another approved opportunity. 5.Fulfill at least 50 hours of active involvement in the process of leadership. Please note that any involvements must be approved beforehand. 6.Meet with a career counselor after completing Level III to discuss the applications of the leadership certificates 7.Complete one of the following capstone options: 1.Create a leadership portfolio 2.Develop a mentor/mentee experience for a semester

14. If you finished the minimum of all requirements to complete Level IV, it would look like this: Workshops: 5 – Level I Workshops 5 – Level II Workshops 5 – Level III Workshops (Interest Area 1) 5 – Level III Workshops (Interest Area 2) 20 – Workshops in Total Volunteer Hours: 8 – Level I Volunteer Hours 8 – Level II Volunteer Hours 8 – Level III Volunteer Hours (Interest Area 1) 8 – Level III Volunteer Hours (Interest Area 2) 32 – Volunteer Hours in Total + Other Requirements: Participate in a CSU Leadership Retreat Meet with a Career Counselor to discuss benefits of experience 50 hours in a Leadership Role Gain a utility piece (i.e. mentor/mentee) + = A REAL CSU Student Leader Reflections: 1 – Level I 500-word paper 1 – Level II 500-word paper 1 – Reflection Session Level III (Interest Area 1) 1 – Reflection Session Level III (Interest Area 2) + +

15. At the completion: 1.After each Level participants will receive a certificate 2.At the end of the year, there will be a reception recognizing those who have completed a certificate 3.When a participant completes Level IV, they will receive Graduation Medal, which a student can choose to wear to their CSU Graduation

16. Does it cost anything to attend? No. This program is a student fee funded program, with very minimal costs due to the generosity and time of many faculty and staff across our campus.

17. What are the time requirements? The real question is how much time would you like to put into your experience. On average, workshops are 60 minutes, some are longer and service hours are required for every level. For example, at the very minimum, a level 1 certificate can take a total of 13 hours; 5 hours for the 60 minute workshop choices and 8 hours of community service.

18. Do I have to start at Level 1 to participate? No. You may attend a workshop at any level at any time. You can even go to a workshop before completing the orientation.

19. I read in Level 4 that there is a leadership experience requirement. Can I count something that I went to last year? Sometimes. In most cases, if you went through a previous leadership experience that has taken place at CSU, come to the SLiCE office and ask us. There are some you are able to count because we have a copy of the syllabus of that experience and there are others you might not be able to count.

20. Can I do more than one interest certificate? Yes. We are also looking to explore the creation of more interest certificates. If you have a new one in mind, let us know.

21. How do we know when we've completed a level? Do you keep track of our activity? We require participants to sign in at each workshop they attend so we can record attendance. We also require participants to complete the Certificate Completion Form.

22. Does the community service I perform have to be through the REAL Experience? No. Community service can be performed individually or with a group. It can also be something you are already doing on your own. When you are ready to notify of us of what your community service project (or projects) was, we will have a form in the SLiCE office for you to complete.

23. I'm a senior graduating in May, can I fulfill the certificate in time? Yes. You can fulfill one certificate or all of them, it just depends on how much time you want to put in.

24. What if I'm not involved on campus, can I still participate? Yes. This could be your first step in connecting with a staff member or other participants in which your interest has been peaked to get involved somewhere else in the community.

25. How do I apply? There is no application process, just drop by a workshop today.
