BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY Strategic Asset Value Analysis
115
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY STRATEGIC ASSET VALUE ANALYSIS Priority Order of Space Needs / Project Concept Auxiliary spaces for all students – means different spaces / needs for various types of students on campus Spaces should provide flexibility for use Continued development of shared facilities With the exception of Rec and Athletics perhaps Focus on easy fixes first then develop long term investments
116
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY STRATEGIC ASSET VALUE ANALYSIS Architectural & Construction Quality Invest in spaces to create a “wow” factor Don’t need to be extravagant with the design
117
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY STRATEGIC ASSET VALUE ANALYSIS Target Market / Campus Locations Decentralized approach Services to all students Specific focus: International Non-Traditional & Family Native American First Generation
118
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY STRATEGIC ASSET VALUE ANALYSIS Operating Paradigm / Financial Performance Transition from risk averse to more risk tolerable Generate more revenue from auxiliaries Initial investment may be needed to spur growth Find donor support where possible
119
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY FOCUS GROUP SUMMARY
120
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY Initial focus groups were held from Dec. 1 st - 3 rd Secondary focus groups were needed due to the lack of qualitative data regarding non-traditional and COT students. During B&D’s first visit there were a total of 51 participants from various groups on campus. Student Leadership, RHA, Recreation, and Athletics. A total of 7 group sessions were organized Overall, all of the participants showed a deep invested interest in the Auxiliaries and Athletics Master Plan. They presented well-reasoned concerns and recommendations for future improvements to the University, some of which may be implemented in the short-term, while others will need sufficient time to plan, organize, and carry out. FOCUS GROUP SUMMARY 80+ Students Yesterday & Today
121
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY The general perception given of the University by participants was very positive: Students felt the cost of attendance was low compared to other schools Participants demonstrated an attraction to the ‘small community’ atmosphere Faculty & staff enjoyed working with colleagues and were often alumni of MSUB Participants felt there was a unique culture to the campus than on other universities: Clear distinctions were established between non-traditional and traditional students Student participants felt there was a clear divide among the two groups and would like to see more interaction between each of them COT students did not feel connected directly with the main campus FOCUS GROUP SUMMARY – GENERAL
122
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY In general, participants agreed that certain improvements needed to be addressed: Update / renovate housing Offer more variety in dining at the COT and cheaper options on main campus Link all 3 MSUB campuses better (participants suggested a shuttle system) Create a more central location for the SUB and improve its usage by non- traditional students Update items of the Bookstore, lower prices and create a more welcoming environment Lastly, the general consensus of participants was that the auxiliaries facilities function adequately, but need basic changes to enhance the experience for students, faculty, and staff. FOCUS GROUP SUMMARY – AUXILIARIES
123
BRAILSFORD & DUNLAVEY Participants stressed basic improvements of facilities in order to better accommodate both parties: Recreation staff felt the necessity to provide a more comfortable space for students in order to reduce any discomfort from sharing the facilities with student-athletes Participants from the Athletic department showed more interest in adding new indoor and outdoor facilities to accommodate all teams because of scheduling conflicts Basic renovations to the weight room and pool were recommended The creation of a dome-like track-and-field structure for practice space and intramural games during the winter months was another recommendation Overall, some improvements were felt necessary in order to tailor to non-athletes, while still enhancing crucial spaces that allow student-athletes to perform at a competitive level.
