6. Are you a member of Facebook or any other social network (MySpace, LinkedIn, etc.)? IF NOT WHY?: 1. I don't trust them 2. No interest 3. I do not wish to have information which I consider private available on the internet. 4. Not interested in having so many people to connect with. Not comfortable with all that social networking and it's not always safe. 5. I have not been persuaded that I need a social network on the web. 6. Don't want to give time to it; don't like some of the information circulating such as private info. 7. Never tried 8. No interest. 9. Not sure how to and don't have time to spend on more internet stuff 10. Not interested have too many interesting things to do 11. I have no interest in communicating in that way 12. Don't really trust it 13. Have not wanted to get involved in another thing 14. I have email, that is enough 15. I don't think it is safe. 16. I was a member of Facebook and TWICE cancelled my membership due to computer viruses that originated from Facebook. 17. Just haven't bothered to, not all that interested.
10
18. If my friends want to know how I'm doing, then they can make the effort to call me. 19. Not sure how safe it is. 20. Don't want to----things people say have no substance 21. My husband is still teaching and I do assistive technology consulting and we both feel there are potential risks that could affect our reputation/jobs. 22. Not interested 23. Just not interested in spending my time that way! 24. No time for that and I can easily contact who I want and need via email 25. No interest 26. Not sure I want to spend MORE time than I am on the computer. Not really interested in connecting with people from the "past". 27. I have no interest in what these have to offer. 28. Too old to learn. 29. privacy concerns 30. Using E-Mail to communicate with others is sufficient for me at this time. 31. Not interested 32. Too many security issues. I follow tech news constantly and what I read and hear about the social networks makes me cringe.. 33. Not interested. Email is fine for me. My husband is on Facebook. 34. Too risky--I value my privacy. 35. I don't want to have my personal life on the internet 36. Security/privacy issues spam issues

Why?
12
1.Research shows that social networking users are much more likely to reconnect with people from their past, and these renewed connections can provide a powerful support network when people near retirement or embark on a new career. Why might social media be increasingly attractive to older adults: Report URL: http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Older-Adults-and-Social-Media.aspx
13
2. Older adults are more likely to be living with a chronic disease, and those living with these diseases are more likely to reach out for support online. Why might social media be increasingly attractive to older adults: Report URL: http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Older-Adults-and-Social-Media.aspx
14
3. Social media bridges generational gaps. While the results can sometimes be messy, these social spaces pool together users from very different parts of people’s lives and provide the opportunity to share skills across generational divides. 7. Do you send and/or receive text messages using your cell phone (including receiving updates from social networks or other social media tools)? 1. I don't feel the need to text people. I can leave a voice message. 2. Only very occasionally if needed 3. I do not have a cell phone that can do that and I do not know how to do it. I am behind and need retraining. 4. No interest at this time, we prefer to talk to those we communicate with. 5. Not at this time. If texting did not cost more a month, I would text. 6. I don't presently have that service on my phone because I don't know how to use it. Also my present phone is not texting friendly (no keyboard) 7. My cell phone is specifically for emergencies only. It is never on, and no one ever calls me on it. The more you use the cell phone for different things the higher the bill. I have and prefer my land line. 8. No, I do not have a need to do that. 9. I know how to text, but just to not have the need to do so frequently. 10. Somewhat interested, but have NO knowledge of it at this time. 11. Only on occasion
18
9. If available, I would prefer to receive CEA's Retired quarterly 4-page publication, The Beacon, by email in place of a printed copy delivered by mail 1. Currently having difficulty opening attachments -will be corrected in the near future so my answer may change 2. I like reading it with my morning coffee! 3. Altho' I know I can access online, I like a hard copy to show prospective members as well as keep as a record for myself. 4. I access other sources to get info and am not in the habit. These sources include emails from CEA, etc. 5. We prefer hard copies of any reading material. We find it easier on the eyes. 6. I can take the paper Beacon with me anywhere but not my desktop computer. 7. I like to sit on the couch and read something held in my hands that does not hurt my eyes 8. I often want a copy of an article to keep on hand 9. I like to have publications in hand 10. I enjoy reading a paper copy. It is too easy to delete an email version on a day when I get a lot of email. 11. Prefer to have a hard copy to refer to 12. Too many emails! 13. I prefer to have materials in my hand so I can access them easier in the future. If I receive too many emails I have difficulty locating them on my desktop, even if they are in file folders. Also, having materials in hand I can cut out pieces I might want to save or highlight information.
19
14. Wouldn't want to read or print out 4 pages of material. 15. I still like to read publications composed of more than one page as printed copy. 16. I don't want to spend that much time on line reading important info. I like to have it in my hands. My printer often breaks down. 17. I am not sure that I would read it in as timely a fashion if it came on line. 18. I prefer a hard copy in hand that I can keep going back to for reference and not having to turn on the computer. The same with the daily newspaper. 19. I prefer a hard copy that I can refer to as needed. 20. I like to share my copy with friends and sometimes clip articles. 21. More likely to read a hard copy 22. I like to go back to it and I like print news 23. There is so much junk mail. It is sometimes easy to miss important information 24. But I need to make sure that other print publications from CEA and NEA are still delivered by mail 25. Although I am very comfortable using technology, I still like receiving The Beacon via mail. I would, of course, adapt to receiving it by email and know it makes more sense from a cost and environmental point of view. 26. I prefer not to read lengthy articles, etc. online. I prefer reading in a printed medium instead. 27. I always read on paper matters that are important to me. The same goes for computer stuff. 28. Do not want to spend the added time on line and prefer to read it at my leisure between activities and would not want to keep running to the computer to refer to something I read in the "Beacon".
20
29. I love sitting down with the hard copy of the Beacon and reading it the "old fashioned" way :) 30. There are times I take the Beacon with me. A small paper is easy to carry. Sometimes, a laptop is not convenient. 31. I find it much easier to read the newsletter itself.

10. Please describe what Internet technologies--social networks, blogs, wikis, etc.--you would most like to learn more about and why 1. Facebook, because I have never used it and would like to hear about the safety issues connected with it. 2. I use Google to research everything. I use a variety of networks to keep in touch with friends and people who have interests similar to my own. 3. Informational web sites 4. Twitter, it seems to be the new thing! 5. A brief definition of each would suffice for me. 6. Learning about websites that offer information of interest as well as names of helpful websites. 7. First I need to buy the correct up dated equipment. Then I need to learn how to use it. I must also be convinced that I have the need. 8. Would like to know what sources are known to have accurate information or which are know to be non accurate. 9. Facebook, 10. None. Our interests are primarily non-internet. 11. Not sure. what is a wikis/ 12. Facebook 13. Probably social networking 14. Social networks - if I understood them more, perhaps I would use them more! 15. I would like to learn more about wikis. I'm not too sure what they are. 16. None
22
17. Skype, Twitter have not used either yet 18. I would like to know what is available and how easy are they to access. 19. How to use Facebook and twitter without setting up a personal account, 20. Using Photoshop and online photo sites for storage of photos and creation of slide shows and/or albums. Editing/cropping photos Figuring out how to buy and sell on E-bay 21. Not certain. I am fairly proficient with the use and dangers. 22. Non 23. For the first time in my life I've got the time to explore the Internet. As each week passes I seem to make new discoveries, and I know I'm only scratching the surface. I'm hoping to learn about other websites I have yet to discover. 24. Not sure-what is available 25. Texting because I have grandchildren that will soon be using that, I am sure. Blogs are a bit of a mystery to me. 26. If you can explain to me the value of a face book page, I might consider. I would like to learn about all the others, blogs, wikis, twitter. I know nothing about them. 27. Linked-in, Facebook, MySpace - want to keep my technology skills up to date. 28. Social networks 29. I already spend enough time on-line. Blogs, tweets, twitters, etc. are not always trustworthy. 30. Social network security settings 31. I would like to know how to be sure your privacy settings are indeed private. 32. Open to all 33. How to set up a blog - just cause I would like to know. I may want to do that. Thanks for asking.
23
34. Any of them - mostly face book 35. First, thanks for sending this questionnaire. I do something similar in the workshops I give on Web 2.0/Social Media and find it very helpful. As an independent education consultant with a focus on educational technology, I look forward to learning new ways to present the topics you list as well as new information about them. 36. I would like to learn more about positive aspects of Facebook, texting, Blackberries., etc. I still feel quite ignorant and behind the times as far as technology is concerned. 37. Would like to become more proficient in researching matters that interest me. 38. Probably social networks because my family uses them. Not sure what wikis are.. 39. None 40. More with my cell phone and texting, voice mail, etc. 41. None...I am satisfied with my current internet use. 42. I'd like to know who the people are who create wikis. Wikipedia often has inaccurate information. I'd like to be given some good education blog sites. I'd like to know more about online security, what to look for, what to avoid, etc. 43. None at this time. 44. I don't have any preference regarding social networks, since I don't plan to use them. Just knowing what they are about would simply keep me informed of their existence. 45. I would like to learn about Facebook only because so many people use it. I personally have no interest in ever using Facebook. 46. Open to all always good to learn more & stay current 47. ?

Profile A profile is the hub of an individual’s presence on Facebook. It includes the person’s wall, notes, photos, videos and other information. Wall Each profile and fan page has a wall on which others can write or post multimedia items. This is the equivalent of a guest book on a website, in that other individuals visiting the profile can leave publicly visible messages. Onto Facebook …

Friends Adding or accepting someone as a friend is the most basic way to connect on Face- book. All friendships are mutual, so if someone requests to be your friend you must accept the request before you are officially “friends.” Status Status updates are Facebook’s response to Twitter. You can enter a short text statement and a photo, video, event, cause or hyperlink as your status. Under default privacy settings, your status updates are visible to all of your friends. Notes The notes application is Facebook’s version of a simplified blogging platform. Anyone on the site can create notes, which can include text, hyperlinks, photos and tags. By default, notes are visible to all of an individual’s friends. Tag Tagging allows you to associate a video, photo or note with another individual’s profile. For example, if pictures are uploaded from an event, those in the photo can be “tagged” to let them know they are in the photo Onto Facebook …
