ROPE BRAKE METHOD A loop of rope is wrapped around the flywheel or the driven shaft, as shown in Fig. 10.1. One end of the rope being connected to a spring balance, while a mass is suspended from the other end of the rope. When the shaft is rotated, friction force is developed and the rope is loosen. Consequently the spring balance reading is reduced by the value of the friction force, then Friction force = mg- F s Torque, T = (mg-F s )D/2 Power, P = Where Fs is the spring balance reading

Other set up to measure the torque where the rope is suspended from its two ends by means of two spring balances. In this case, Torque, T= (F s2 – F s1 )D/2 Where Fs1,and Fs2 are the readings of the spring balances
