On the one hand Intel’s CPU comes with standard thermal and power management features to prevent heat. On the other hand these features can prevent the server from running with maximum performance because of a throttled CPU. Therefore Fujitsu put much effort in designing cool systems which will deliver maximum performance whenever (24/7) and wherever (rack optimized or pedestal server) it is needed. The new housings host bigger fans and have a improved airflow (independent air tunnels, and a three-level split airflow concept). The bigger fans in combination with independent air tunnels ensure higher air throughput and therefore better cooling characteristics. Fans and power supplies can be chosen as redundant configuration, these redundant components are easy to exchange and even Hot-pluggable. Deploying a server takes place at the very first installation of a server, at refreshing and at updating an installation or at rearranging servers to applications for load balancing. Technologies involved are automatic hardware recognition, automated unattended installation, flashing of settings, image cloning and copying of installations. Our tools used here are ServerStart, RemoteDeploy and Scripting Tools, each offering support to unique scenarios. Further extensive Control is provided according to the possible server states: In-Band – and Out-of-band control. In-Band-Control means: Operating system (OS) and Server Management - Agents are working and these agents communicate via OS with the Central Management Station. In-band-Control is supported by the ServerView component. It performs Health Monitoring & Alarm handling and covers further disciplines as Asset Management (Inventory), Performance Management. Further it provides important information to accomplish for maintenance tasks like firmware – or software updates. It manages single servers locally or remotely, a group of servers, or even a large network of servers. An exiting feature is its alerting system, which offers second to none flexibility at setting up an appropriate service reaction to the different levels of alarms. Maintaining a server means to have access to it any time, even if the operating system or the hardware are non-functional any more. RemoteView comprises a test and diagnostic subsystem which works independent from the server hardware and its operating system. It can accomplish an error analysis or correction, and it makes system monitoring via an operating system watchdog possible. RemoteView in addition allows for Out-of-band Control and is indispensible when accomplishing maintenance tasks Given the user has no more “In-band-Control” – nevertheless he can access the server via a separate management channel allowing e.g. for remote maintenance, server reconfiguration, restart; at all to recover from failures. This 2nd management channel is provided by autonomous management controls with its Service – LAN port. In PRIMERGY Servers depending on server type we provide a Service LAN – port either by installing extra hardware (Remote Service Board in older servers) or it is already integrated in the Server hardware (iRMC/iRMC S2 – Integrated Remote Management Controller in newer ones). For convenient management web – front ends are self-evident. What about integration? As our servers are not standing alone in datacenters often it is necessary to integrate into a given 3rd – party, vendor management or enterprise management. Vice versa more and more customers are tending to use ServerView Suite as their “House Standard”. In both direction ServerView offers proven integration solutions coping with users demands. To integrate into 3rd party or enterprise management easy installable (wizard – technology) PRIMERGY Integration modules (PIMs) are used. The integration of other vendor systems into ServerView is accomplished, using the information (MIBs) delivered by these devices.
