2 Mission Statement & Goals: -Our mission is to test methods of collecting particulates in the stratosphere. -Team V is interested in collecting and eliminating particles in the air. We want to pioneer ways to clean the air we breathe. -Ideally, our project will be an inspiration to future DemoSat participants from CCA, and they will continue the research and experimenting we began.

3 Benefits to NASA: – NASA is beginning to look more at our own planet than others. Concerns about climate change and the environment should be a major focus, to ensure human safety. -With our project, we are looking to clean up the air we breathe. We want to test viable ways to combat climate change. We have emissions standards set for manmade pollutant contributors to reduce particles in the air, no one has really tested ways to eliminate particles in the air itself. If Team V can find a way to collect and eliminate particulates in the air, we might one day be able to control amounts of air pollutants.

4 Design: -Team V is planning to test the feasibility of using silicone oil to collect particulates in the air for elimination when our samples get back to the ground. -Mass: 750 g -Expense: $151 -Team V has a total of 3 students involved. We had our first meeting on June 2 nd, 2010. After about 5 different designs, we came up with the current design July 7 th, 2010.

6 Expected Results: -We essentially are trying to figure out if silicone oil can collect particulates. We will have a control and sampling system. Our research and various testing shows that silicone oil can withstand extreme conditions, i.e. it won’t freeze at low temperatures, which is why we decided to fly it. -We are testing an open/close mechanism with a standard parallax servo. -We plan to microscopically compare the control and sample petri dishes once back on the ground.

7 Drop Test Exterior damage on the corner. No interior damage. Open/Close Testing Results:

8 Stair Pitch Test Minor exterior damage at the corners. Whip test results: Jostling of weight inside.
