Data Catalogs Product: EPA's Guide to Selected National Environmental Statistics in the U.S. Government (1993) – Interagency Metadata Format, Link to Actual Data, and Sample Graphic of That Data – Lead to Digital Libraries in Next Section Purpose: The Five things in Title - Guide, Selected, National, Environmental Statistics, U.S. Government Technology: Folio Author Once - Publish Multiple Ways (Paper, Diskette, and Web Service) – Still at http://www.sdi.gov and http://web-services.govhttp://www.sdi.govhttp://web-services.gov Goal: Become a Bureau for Environmental Statistics (like the Bureau of Labor Statistics) – Got to be a Center for Environmental Statistics. – Got to help start the National Biological Service (Department of Interior) for its first three years. Digital Libraries Products: Biological Resources (1994), Sustainable Development Indicators and Industrial Ecology (2001), State of the Environment and Federal Statistics (1994), Indicators (2002), and Community Programs (2002) – Pioneered Electronic Publishing of Large Documents with Data - Lead to Publishing Federal Statistics in Next Section Purpose: Support the Council on Environmental Quality and the Interagency Working Group on Sustainable Development Technology: Same Folio – LivePublish Author Once - Publish Multiple Ways – Folio to Next Page to Fast Search and Transfer to Microsoft (Bing). Now Rocket Software NXT4 Goal: Federated Content Network (like Socrata wants to do for Data.gov!) Recognition: Exceptional Performance Awards from DoI and USGS 4

FedStats.gov and FedStats.net Products: One Stop for Federal Statistics (1997) and Distributed Content Network for Annual Statistical Abstract (1998) Purpose: As part of the Administration's efforts to achieve improved customer service and greater efficiency throughout the Federal government, FedStats will benefit both Federal agencies and the public in reducing the amount of time and effort necessary to locate data (http://fedstats.gov/osspress.html).http://fedstats.gov/osspress.html Technology: Open Source Web Page System and NXT4 – Also MapStats: United States - To view a profile of your State, county, city, congressional district, or Federal judicial district, select the name of the State from the menu or use the map of the United States (http://fedstats.gov/qf/ )http://fedstats.gov/qf/ – Note: http://fedstats.net now at http://web-services.gov and http://www.sdi.govhttp://web-services.govhttp://www.sdi.gov Goal: Official Federal statistics are now much easier and faster to find, thanks to a new World Wide Web site unveiled today by the Clinton Administration (1997); and the Annual Statistics Abstract (about 40 chapters and about 1500 data sets) are available in a distributed content network (looks like it is in one place but is physically distributed across multiple Web servers so the content is maintained by its stewards) (1998).
