Social performance Challenges and solutions from a UK perspective Young sector in UK Financing under seven years About 50 MFIs Lack of scale and reach New world order demands new approach
3
It’s a balancing act
4
Financial performance
5
Social performance
6
Based on the mission
7
Trouble is ……
8
All missions are not the same…
9
Finding the common denominator……
10
So, we tried a broad model…. Inputs Resources (finance, people, buildings, etc) that are needed for the organisation to carry out its work Process What has to be done by the organisation to produce outputs
11
Outputs Outputs are the direct results of processes and activities of the organisation Outcomes Outcomes are the new situation(s) that the organisation is aiming to bring about
12
Impacts Impacts are all the changes which result from an activity or programme including intended as well as unintended effects, negative as well as positive and long term as well as short term effects. Whereas an outcome is a change resulting from project outputs, impact refers to broader, longer- term change and relates to the organisation’s overall aim
13
Example Unique according to each CDFI’s mission and activity to support that mission, but might include getting the unemployed into jobs, how long they remain in them and how their quality of life is improved or improving household welfare and broader effects on the community or local economy
14
More trouble….. Lack of ability to report Lack of consistency in reporting
15
So we had to agree….. Key indicators by market Discussions included: - one target? - a band? - aspirational? -iterative - when to change….. (it took a while!)
16
So, I have learnt … Articulate the mission - make it strong Create systems and procedures from the outset Make sure you test against it regularly Be prepared to change it!
17
Brings mobile money from emerging economies to the UK Added value for users - discounts at local shops Building local economies Over 9m here are under banked 85% have mobiles Buying local improves business revenue by an average of 3.5%
18
The Wizzmoni approach Test against mission How much would a prepaid card cost a user Assume a P2P transfer saves a bus fare/petrol – average amount Assume a savings on transactions Calculate costs saved per consumer, per annum Multiply by number of consumers
19
The Wizzmoni approach Test against mission Buy Local – how many local purchases are made, how much is saved by customer, increased business for local entrepreneurs - individual deals Online purchases – estimate using baseline figures already available
20
The Wizzmoni approach Test against mission Anecdotal evidence Customer feedback Agent network Local businesses
