Tsunami.gov Improvement Project Jenifer Rhoades MES-EC Overview October 18, 2011
2
Tsunami.gov Requirements RequirementValidated?PriorityProject Phase Replace current WC/ATWC map on tsunami.gov with list of products from both TWCs Y11 Add status bar to the top of tsunami.gov page indicating if there is an active warning/advisory/watch Y11.1 Create NWS National Active Tsunami Hazards Map, showing active warnings/advisories/watches Y12 Create an NWS Global Active Tsunami Hazards Map Y13 Add earthquake location and information to the maps Y14
3
Tsunami.gov Requirements Links on Map RequirementValidated?PriorityProject Phase Embed Links to additional information in NWS Global Active Tsunami Hazards Map Warning/Advisory/Watch Information: Current Alert Level Definition of Alert Level Link to Product Guidance How Warning System Works County-Level information: Local Guidance Website* Local Contacts (public)* Inundation/Evacuation Maps* Y12.1&3.1 * Relying on NTHMP partners to provide information.
4
Tsunami.gov Requirements Need prioritization Scale 1-5, and “NR” 5 = Highest Priority (“Can’t or won’t use the site without it!”) 1 = Lowest Priority NR = “This should not be a requirement.”
5
Tsunami.gov Requirements Additional Links on Map RequirementValidated?Priority Embed Links to additional information in NWS Global Active Tsunami Hazards Map Warning/Advisory/Watch Information: Model Output Y5 Tide Gauge Data Y5 DART data Y5 County-Level information: Historic Events (in close proximity) Y3 Webcams (in close proximity) Y3
6
Tsunami.gov Requirements Map Layers RequirementPriority Add Selectable Layers for Map: Different TWCs' area of responsibility (AOR) 4 TWC Product Break Points 1 Plate Tectonics NR Historic Earthquakes 1 Expired TWC Alerts NR Historic Tsunamis 1 Evacuation maps (Note: Need to ensure we get meta data from States) 5 Sea level gage and buoy locations and IDs 3 Sea-level and DART Observations 5 Tsunami Model Output - Forecast Height 5 Tsunami Model Output - Forecast Timeline 5 Note: The question here is for the map. Non-Map linking to data is covered in separate requirements.
7
Tsunami.gov Requirements Map con’t RequirementPriority Add Information Statements to the maps What area should be “shaded”? (See Note Below) Use philosophy that they “expire” after 24 hours 5 Make layers available for download KML/KMZ/Shape Files4 The area that should be shaded green are all areas that are not in a warning, advisory, or watch. After product expires no areas w/o an active product should be shaded.
8
Tsunami.gov Requirements Miscellaneous RequirementPriority Consolidate links from TWC websites onto tsunami.gov4 Consolidate www.tsunami.gov and www.tsunami.noaa.govwww.tsunami.noaa.gov This site should be branded as a research site to avoid confusion. NR Provide an RSS feed for tsunami products based on the PTWC and/or WCATWC AOR 5 Display news and/or announcements from the TWCs3 Links to other relevant sites or messages (e.g., JMA, Australia, etc) 1 Links to educational and outreach material5 Links to reference material5
9
Tsunami.gov Requirements TWC information RequirementPriority Incorporate the following information for the Tsunami Program (note removed items that the States feel can just remain on the TWC websites): Tsunami Program Strategic Plan Mission History of TWCs Overview of the Tsunami Warning System Processing – This should be under the overview Networks – This should be under the overview 3
10
Tsunami.gov Requirements Sea-Level Data Requirement Priority Incorporate tables of sea-level estimates and actual levels during events 5 Incorporate Links to Tide Gauge Data Alaska Near Real-time Tide Gauges NOS Near Real-time Tide Gauge Data NOAA/NDBC DART Buoy Sea Level Data University of Hawaii Sea Level Center Japanese Tide Data Site Hong Kong Tide Gauge Data Netherlands Tide United Kingdom Tide Site Baja, Mexico Tide Gauge IOC PRSN 2
11
Tsunami.gov Requirements Earthquake Data Archive RequirementPriority Incorporate Links to Earthquake Data Archives Recent earthquake information from USGS/NEIC WCATWC Earthquake Information PTWC Earthquake Information Earthquake/seismic monitor network Catalogs Seismicity Global CMT Search Page NEIC Earthquake Statistics PRSN 2
12
Tsunami.gov Requirements TWC Product Archive RequirementPriority Incorporate a searchable TWC product archive Search on any combination of product dates, regions affected, or issuing TWC 5 Results from TWC product archive should be downloadable into a zip file, other formats 5
13
Tsunami.gov Requirements Tsunami Event Archive RequirementPriority Incorporate Links to Tsunami Data Archives Tsunami Catalogs WCATWC area tsunamis from 1737 – 1996 Information page about the Augustine Volcano Tsunami Hazard Tsunami statistics (pdf) Information page about the Great Alaskan Earthquake and Tsunamis of 1964 Information about tsunami travel Times and bathymetry, including: - Tsunami Travel Time Charts - Coastal Bathymetry Data Sets - Tsunami Inundation Maps Information specifically for Hawai’i ResidentsHawai’i Residents The Tsunami Info Ctr http://www.weather.gov/ptwc/jump.php?site=www.tsunamiwave.infoTsunami Info Ctr http://www.weather.gov/ptwc/jump.php?site=www.tsunamiwave.info NGDC’s Tsunami Database http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/hazard/tsu.shtmlTsunami Database http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/hazard/tsu.shtml 3
14
Tsunami.gov Requirements Require LogIn RequirementPriority Add log-in capability for Emergency Managers and other user types Customize options to display/hide information 3 Incorporate social media elements and collaboration functionality such as a chat and commenting/bulletin community 3 Allow some users to edit and publish content NR Allow some users access to a document repository, and the ability to publish to it NR Allow some users to control the length of display time for tsunami watch, warnings, advisories and information statements NR Allow users to select the desired time display format - Can this be automatic based on end-user’s location? 5 Investigate overlay of forecasted flooding areas during events 5 Primary Issue: Want to have capability to acquire information before the Public 5
15
Tsunami.gov Requirements Additional Information RequirementPriority Link to information from the following web sites: http://nctr.pmel.noaa.gov/ http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/hazard/tsu.shtml http://ioc3.unesco.org/itic/ http://www.weather.gov/nwr/ http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ http://ibis.grdl.noaa.gov/SAT/SAT.html http://www.earthquake.gov/ http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/tsunami/ http://www.usgs.gov/hazards/tsunamis/ 2
16
Tsunami.gov Requirements What’s Missing? RequirementPriority Existing TWC sites need to have a consistent look and feel (Corporate branding) 4 Need ability for Public to sign up for TWC Products on a single site 5 Develop an Overlay of CISN data 5
17
NWS Next Steps 1.Prioritize and Validate Requirements 2.Analyze Technical Complexity 3.Define Development Phase 4.Design, Develop, Test, “Go Live” with Phases 5.Update NTHMP members at Annual Meeting 6.Continuously Validate/Prioritize Remaining and New Requirements
