Games and Learning If you play games, what are the instructional qualities or value that you see in your favorite games? What do you learn when you play? If you don't play games, research or find a game that you are interested in and play it (or think of a game you used to play). What are/were the instructional qualities that you experienced, if any? What did you learn while playing?
3
Papert Mindstorms What assumptions does Papert make about children, learning, schools? What does Papert think a child is doing when learning to program with LOGO? Where does Papert’s view of “constructivism” match (or not match) your own?
4
Papert 1987 What were the main points made by critics of LOGO? How does Papert characterize the “School A” and “School B” models? What was happening in each around LOGO? What is Papert’s vision of the “cultural process” of schooling? How does it compare with your own?
5
Pea 1987 What issues did Pea and his colleagues find when they tried to investigate the effects of LOGO on learning? What different approaches to experimental research in education does Pea discuss? Compare the approach and tone of both Papert’s and Pea’s articles – this is what an academic dispute looks like in print. What strikes you?
