Scientific Process By: Mallory McGilvray
3
What is the scientific process? A series of steps to investigate a scientific problem. Figure out the problem Observe and research Hypothesis Experiment Collect data and results Conclusion
4
Figure out the Problem Figure out a problem that you can: Measure through numbers Through experimentation Ask questions about what you observe: How What When Who Which Why Where
5
Observe and Research Make observations Research desired topic by: Library books Internet Interpret your observations and research
6
Develop your Hypothesis Predict a possible answer to your problem or question. State in easy way to measure State in If- then statements: Example: “If ___ (I do this)____, then ___(this)___ will happen.” Can be either supported or disapproved
7
Conduct your Experiment 1. Develop your experiment and procedure 2. Follow your procedure 1. Include materials list 2. Variable: factors that change 1. Only change 1 factor at a time keeping all conditions the same 3. Repeat experiment several times
8
Control Group Must be a control group Standard of comparison Experimental group No treatment group Exposed to same conditions as the other group but the variable being tested
9
Constants All factors that stay the same in the experiment At least one factor must stay the same throughout the experiment
10
Controlled Experiment In the experiment, all of the variables expect for one stay the same. Your experiment must be controlled! Measure using the International System of Units (SI)
11
Collect Data Confirm your data by doing more than one test Data should be: Graphs Charts Photographs Written notes
12
Interpret Data Organize and Interpret all of your data sources Figure out the results See if your hypothesis is right or wrong Make a new hypothesis to retest if it is wrong
13
Conclusion Statement that includes: If hypothesis is right or wrong Recommendations for studying experimental topic Improvements for your next experiment Be ready to communicate results with others Expect people to ask questions
