4 Definitions LAN -Local Area Network WAN – Wide Area Network WiFi = Wireless Fidelity ETHERNET – Most common system today of hardware and software and protocols for making networks INTERNET – A global INTERconnection of NETworks

5 Protocols The RULE and Conventions to allow for communication between computers Implemented in SOFTWARE Required by HARDWARE (routers and servers) Lots of them at different levels

6 Networks Private – like in a business or an office or at home Public – like the Internet or MSN

7 Some Application Protocols SMTP – simple mail transport portocol (used for email) POP – Post Office Protocol (delivers mail like an ordinary letter ie to your “mailbox”)

8 Transport Protocols Rules for delivering the coded messages that are in computer network communications TCP – Transmission Control Protocol IP v4 and IP v6 – the rules for uniquely identifying individual users on the internet. (billions of unique adresses)
