Presentation Overview  Background  Customer Needs  Design Criteria  Conceptual Designs

Tanzania, Africa George & Vickie Rock

Lack of Resources

Current Setup  Two schools have 6 seat setups with 1 computer  System has problems registering and there is no audio

Issues with Current Setup  Keyboards are assigned to wrong Screen  Mice are clicked out of order  USB cables when unplugged cause system to become confused

Customer Needs  Third School to be added  Sound for individual sessions  Automated keyboard and mouse

Deliverables  Automated Association of  Monitor  Keyboard  Mouse  Integrate Audio at each station

Design Criteria  Low Cost  User Friendly  Low Power  Can be Replicated  Low Maintenance

Conceptual Designs - Software  Linux (Ubuntu)  MDM (Multi-seat Display Manager)  GDM (GNOME Display Manager)  Userful (Commercial Software)

Multi-seat Display Manager  Specifically designed for multiple seats  Runs nested, virtual sessions  Pros  Free  Currently being used in Tanzania  Cons  Less support  Easy for users to make mistakes

GNOME Display Manager  Current Ubuntu configuration  Multiple user system  Pros  Inexpensive  Common display manager  Cons  Not currently used in Tanzania  Not designed for more than two seats

Userful  Commercial software  Designed for up to 10 seats  Pros  It does everything!  Solves audio problem  Solves automation problem  Cons  Cannot alter configuration files  More expensive (roughly 35% per seat)

Conceptual Designs - Hardware  Automated USB Hub  Device will perform automatic registration for Keyboard, Mouse and Sound  May require additional custom software  Will not be needed with Userful solution

AUDRI - Automatic USB Device Registration Interface

Cost Analysis - Per Seat  Software  USB audio  USB hub  Enclosure  Total  Software  USB hub with audio  Total = $69 MDMUserful - Free - $20 - $5 = $45

Cost Savings  Comparing MDM and Userful  $24 saved per seat x 6 seats per school = $144  3 schools x $144 = $432  If implemented in 100 schools (600 seats)  Savings of $14,400
