3 “Should I work while I’m in school?”  Studies have shown that students who work 10-12 hours per week do better academically than those who do not.  You gain valuable transferrable skills such as time management, leadership and teamwork that future employers will find attractive  You will get to know the campus, faculty, staff, and make friends with other students

4 Which job to choose?  Relate your Part-time Job to Your Future Career When selecting where to work on- campus, you should consider your major and / or skills you will need Student Employment can help you gain experience in the field you are interested in pursuing  Examples: An Education Major could choose to work as a Tutor A Communications Major could choose to work for the Campus Radio Station, WZIP Biology major – lab assistant etc.

5 You have choices: Variety of Opportunities are avalable  There are many places to work and different positions available on-campus Dining Services Recreation Center Research Assistant Police Department Office Administration Computer Technology  Try something new to expand your areas of interest and skill sets

6 On-Campus Jobs and Your Class Schedule Something to think about:  Most office jobs have operating hours from 8am-5pm, M-F  Some departments are open during the weekend  On-campus jobs allow you to schedule your work hours around your classes  Work during long breaks between classes

7 “I need a JOB!”  All available Jobs are posted on the Student Employment Website Student Employment Website Go to www.uakron.edu/career and then click on “Find a Student Job”www.uakron.edu/career  Choose from: On-campus postings Federal Work Study (FWS) opportunities ○ Students are awarded a Federal Work Study as a part of their financial aid Off-campus job postings  Check the website often because it is updated regularly

8 Student Employment Requirements  To work on campus you must be a full-time student  Full-time means: Enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, - OR- Enrolled in 6 credit hours for FWS positions  You cannot work over 30 hours each week  For more information about specific requirements and exceptions refer to our Student Employment Manual on our web-site: http://www.uakron.edu/career/student- employment/ Student Employment Manual http://www.uakron.edu/career/student- employment/

9 How to Apply for a Job  Jobs are available in different departments across campus Each department may have different requirements and application procedures  Apply to each position separately according to the instructions for each posting  There is NO campus-wide application

10 “Can I work multiple on-campus jobs?”  YES!  Just remember that the total combined hours you work on campus must be 30 hours or less  If you exceed the limit, it results in automatic termination  Example: You are working 2 on-campus jobs Your hour total from BOTH jobs combined must not exceed 30 hours ○ i.e.15 hours at each or 10 at one job and 20 at the other, etc.  Remember to keep a healthy balance between work and school

11 Top Attributes of Student Employees  Consistently on-time to work  Strong work ethic and attention to detail  Timely completion of tasks  Committed to follow the job description  Does not abuse technology (no cell phones, Facebook, etc…)  Professional / appropriate dress
