He also goes to stay at short-time living facilities every other weekend. On alternate weekends he stays in a short-stay residential centre. John has spare clothes and other necessities in the home of each parent but, when going to the residential centre, he needs to pack his bag with items to last him three days. Currently John gets help packing his things but often gets angry if something is missing, blaming whichever parent was responsible for packing his bag, whenever he arrives at either house or when at the residential centre. The HANDS toolset can help this pupil do his own packing. If the list is compiled with the student then no blame can be apportioned to either his Mother or Father.

Pedagogical consideration: Collaboration is required with both parents, those at the residential centre and, of course, the pupil himself. 2. Create separate lists with the pupil showing what items he needs to bring to both parents’ homes and the residential centre; remembering to include non-essential items such as books, magazines, and his Nintendo DS amongst others. 3. Operation on CoMe: Create an appointment in HIPD for the times when the pupil is going to pack his things. 4. Operation on CoMe: Create a PT that contains the steps needed to complete the packing 5. If required: Set rewards. 6. Pedagogical work: Initially, organise someone to help the pupil pack his bags correctly.

Does he require pictures or is text enough? 2.Remember to do things the positive way. It could be a good idea to add a convinient moment with a PT that tells the pupil how good it is and what benefits it brings to do his own packing 3.It would be advantageous and positive for the student to have included, within his PT a positive ’reward’ informing him of the benefits of doing his packing himself. 4.Ensure, by listening to the pupil’s needs, that his ’to pack’ lists are constantly updated. 5.You could look at the following tunnels for more guidance: Tunnel 2 – Metatunnel Organization outside of school Independence training How to work with rewards How to work with motivation Building self esteem
