ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED PRESERVATION OF THE SAINTS
ETERNAL SECURITY ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED PRESERVATION OF THE SAINTS

Introduction Our privilege of participation in eternal life is directly dependent on our CONTINUING to abide in Christ. If we fail to abide in Him, our participation in that life ceases.

OT Examples Adam and Eve – in Paradise – were removed from the blessings of the garden Cain – was sent out after killing his brother

NT Examples Parable of Sower – 3 of 4 soils – lost
Parable of Forgiveness – King took back the forgiveness and threw the man in jail Vine and Branches – Not produce fruit, cut off and cast into the fire

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? There are two things to remember about ALL of these texts: PRESENT ACTIVE – Action in progress, continuing action, present and ongoing CONDITIONAL PROMISE – “IF / THEN” – Jesus establishes the conditions on which the promises will be kept.

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 10:  My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 10:27-29 4 Conditions

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 8:51 Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death." Condition – IF anyone keeps my word Present Active – Keep on keeping the word of Christ

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." Condition – IF anyone follows me Present Active – We must KEEP following Christ

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Condition – We must HEAR and BELIEVE Present Active – Continue to Hear and Believe

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: Condition – Receive Him, believe in Him Present Active – Receive and believe are continuing actions

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? John 4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." Condition – Drink of that water Present Active – Keep on drinking

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? 1 John 2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. Condition – Practice righteousness Present Active – Continue living a righteous life

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? 1 John 3:9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. Condition – Born of God Present Active – Seed remains in him

WHAT ABOUT THIS TEXT? 2 Corinthians 1:  Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Condition – Anointed, indwelling Spirit Present Active – Continue to be in Christ

ON THE OTHER HAND - - There are many passages which teach the possibility and danger of falling away. 1 Timothy 4:1 some will depart from the faith 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 – Saved if you keep in memory the gospel Colossians 1:21-23 If you continue in the faith

ON THE OTHER HAND - - There are many passages which teach the possibility and danger of falling away. Hebrews 3:12 – Don’t depart from God Galatians 5:4 – You are fallen from grace Hebrews 12:15 – Fall short of grace of God AND MANY OTHERS

DANGERS WE FACE: Possibility vs. Probability Do we have “Blessed Assurance”? Salvation by Works thinking Many still try to work into heaven Automatic forgiveness Many feel that sins are forgiven as soon as comitted – no repentance needed

CONCLUSION: The New Testament affirms that eternal life in Christ is our present possession only on the condition of present living faith, rather than as the irrevocable consequence of a moment’s act of faith sometime in the past. Is your salvation a present reality?
