Wireless instrumentation application Adrien Nadal Supervisor : Jasper Verberk April – July 2009

Introduction Legionella is one of the main danger in water pipes network research are still carried out to find new way to monitor the pipes network to find Legionella and then remove it I had a new instrumentation : the Wireless Sensors Network developed by SOWNET Technology the aim of this internship is to test this technology on the water supply system of the Civil engineering building 09/07/20092/10

Legionella Some reminders about Legionella : Discovered and isolated in 1977 in Philadelphia (U.S.) Present in the natural aquatic environment Temperature range development : 32°C to 42°C Multiplies under conditions of oxygen saturation Fails to multiply under anaerobic conditions but remains available during days (about 20) Dies at 50°C and more 09/07/20093/10

Sensors Wireless sensors network : to measure the water temperature inside the pipe from the outside 1 gateway 1 repeater 1 software 10 sensors make measurements over long distance difficult access point can be reached 09/07/20094/10

Sensors’ tests Tests in bucket of water Results : a difference of 1°C between the sensors and the thermometer a maximum difference of 0.5°C between 2 sensors response time about 30 second distance range between 2 sensors about 20 meters 09/07/20095/10

Sensors’ tests Tests on pipes Results : the results are the same as in the previous experiment one exception there is a little delay due to heat conduction through the pipe and the sensor 09/07/20096/10

Main experiment – part 1 Description : ground flour of stevinlab 3 about 35 meters long 2 hours long experiment Interpretation : the first sensor is the hottest because of a heat source in the lab the temperature seems to increase with the length of pipes few risk of Legionella 09/07/20097/10

Main experiment – part 2 Description : ground flour of stevinlab 3 about 55 meters long 12 hours long experiment node 10 is on a pipe at the exit of the boiler in the coffee room node 9 is on a cold water pipe next to the boiler Interpretation : the boiler has an influence on the cold water pipe may be a risk of Legionella 09/07/20098/10

Main experiment – part 3 Description : basement of stevinlab 2 about 65 meters long 36 hours long experiment Interpretation : node is at the beginning and hotter than the other nodes it is difficult to say if the temperature increase with the length of pipes because of sensors accuracy 09/07/20099/10

Conclusion 09/07/200910/10 this technology seems to be adapted to find new spots of Legionella in water supply system the second experiment seems to show that the sensors may give information on the dynamic inside the pipes nevertheless I didn’t study the influence of the external temperature on the sensors
