1 USING VISUAL MEDIA AS A PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE TO HIV/AIDS IN RWANDA Lea Hane ‘12 Sociology major with premedicine

2 HIV/AIDS in Rwanda  Nearly half of Rwanda’s total population is below the age of 15. Many of these youth were orphaned through the 1994 genocide and HIV/AIDS.  Many adult women living with HIV were infected through rape.  Public Health officials report that the incidence of HIV/AIDS among youth is increasing while services and education that caters to them is insufficient.  3 Approaches: condoms, gender-based violence, sugar-daddy/sugar-mommy

3 My Research  Qualitative and opinion-based  In-depth interviews with Rwandan doctors, nurses, youth workers and community health workers  All 5 provinces of Rwanda  Example:

4 Internship with Imbuto Foundation  Imbuto Foundation was founded by the first lady of Rwanda after the genocide and began with a focus on women and children.  Current programs: literacy expansion, Young Rwandan Achievers, education and empowerment of girls, malayika murinzi, health insurance, malaria prevention and HIV/AIDS prevention and support  My projects: Mountain Movers and Vuga Ukuli
