Do Now: 1.Pick up your Do Now and Notes page. 2.Sit in YOUR seat. 3.Write your homework in agenda. 4.SILENTLY and INDEPENDENTLY...COMPLETE your Do Now. ●Today you need: 1. Do Now half sheet 2. Notes page 3. pen or pencil

Daily Learning Objective SWBAT differentiate between biotic and abiotic factors by classifying real world examples Essential Learning Question If it’s not living, why is it important?

Week 32 - Ecology Review → notecards due Friday (100 pts) → homework due Friday (50 pts) Day 2 - AGENDA Do Now Biotic and Abiotic Factors Mini-Lesson Field Trip Exit Ticket

What is Ecology?? ● The study of interactions between organisms and their environment. ● It explains how living organisms affect each other and the world they live in.

An Organism ● Organism: An individual living thing that is made of cells, uses energy, reproduces, responds, grows, and develops

Are all of these things living? NO!! An ecosystem has many important parts that are living and non-living.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Ecosystem: All the biotic and abiotic factors in an environment put together.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Definition Biotic All of the living or once-living organisms that inhabit an environment Abiotic Anything nonliving

Biotic and Abiotic Factors Definition Biotic All of the living or once-living organisms that inhabit an environment Abiotic The nonliving parts of an organism’s environment

Abiotic or Biotic? Abiotic: Water and rocks are non-living

Abiotic or Biotic?

Biotic

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Sun *Provides Light, Heat, and Energy *Without the sun: All biotic factors (all living things) would die

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Water *Provides a place to live for many creatures, hydrates all biotic factors *Without water: All biotic factors (all living things) would die

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Air *Helps many biotic factors breathe *Without air: Most biotic factors (most living things) would die

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Temperature *Many creatures can only survive in certain temperatures *Extreme temperature changes: Could kill many of the biotic factors

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Soil *Provides a home, nutrients, support *Without the soil: Plants would die and many biotic factors would be affected

What would happen to all the biotic factors if there were no abiotic factors? All biotic factors would DIE without abiotic factors!

Exit Ticket: SITTING in your seat… SILENTLY and INDEPENDENTLY… Complete your ET…
