Second Grade CogAT What is the CogAT Test and why did my child need to take it? The CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) measures a child’s learned reasoning abilities.  Think of this as the degree of readiness to learn & perform well in a particular situation- school. The information gathered is used as part of the process for placement in the AIG Program.

Second Grade CogAT CogAT contains three areas: Verbal ~ The skills needed for reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing and verbal learning tasks Quantitative ~ The ability to work with numbers, mathematical symbols, and problem solving Nonverbal ~ The ability to reason by using geometric shapes and figures; create and use strategies for solving the problems

CogAT Cognitive Abilities Test Verbal Classification Which word does not go with the others in the set below? A tall B tiny C huge D quiet E large Which word could be included with the others in the set below? newspaper pamphlet magazine A read B book C buy D print E letters

CogAT Cognitive Abilities Test Verbal Analogies Wheel is to skateboard as door is to… A wood B house C window D enter E glass Candy Sweet : Lemon …. A lemonade B yellow C sour D oblong E fruit slide side lid brand band … A land B ran C bid D lad

CogAT Cognitive Abilities Test Number Series Choose the answer that would go next in the pattern. 3A 6B 9C... A 10D B 12E C 12D D 18E

Figure Classification The drawings in the box go together in a certain way. Choose the drawing that completes the pattern. ab dc

CogAT Cognitive Abilities Test Figure Analysis The first figure below shows how a square piece of paper is folded and where holes are punched in it. How would the paper look when it is unfolded?

Second Grade CogAT Taking a look at the results and decoding what they mean. Your child’s unique profile will provide some clues as to their strengths and challenges.

Second Grade CogAT

Another Sample Profile 5 B (V-) 5 Refers to the student’s middle Age Stanine Score. (5 is average) B Refers to the overall profile of the scores. In this example, B highlights that one score is below the other scores. (V-) Shows the areas of strengths or weakness. This student has a Verbal weakness.

Second Grade CogAT Parent Tips Activities to help build reasoning and problem solving skills: Play Scrabble, chess, Boggle, number based games, checkers, dominos, solve the Rubik's Cube and Sudoku puzzles. And yes…play video games! Create origami, add dialogue to comic strips, do crossword puzzles, build with Legos.

Second Grade CogAT Students with challenges usually: Struggle with poor memory strategies Need basic content knowledge Need highly structured learning environments Require repetitive instruction Need demonstration & modeling Need to know very basics of what to do step by step Can be paired with higher ability students

Second Grade CogAT Students with strengths usually: Have good knowledge base Are able to see relationships Require less practice Will get bored if kept too long on a task Expect things to have meaning Think of practice and “drill” strategies as of having little value Perform best with low structure

Second Grade CogAT Planning for third grade & gathering information for AIG services

Second Grade CogAT As AIG facilitator, I: Search the CogAT results for students who are in the 90 th percentile when compared to their age equivalent peers Gather data from the classroom teachers and parents (Nomination Form) Invite students who meet the criteria to be further evaluated with a nationally normed achievement test Share the results with families

Second Grade CogAT What does third grade AIG enrichment look like? Novel studies Math problem solving and extension activities Concept-based units and integrated projects Guest speakers
