2. Literacy objectives
Demonstrates awareness of vocabulary associated with airplanes by being able to explain the meaning behind each word
Using the vocabulary words by associating the spoken word to its visual form
Being able to identify beginning sounds of vocabulary words (phonological awareness)
Engages in read aloud with questions and comments before, during, and after the story
Able to retell the story orally

4. Materials/props
passport toy airplane post card small chairs pilot hat small suitcases plane ticket (out of flash cards) seatbelts (old ties or scarves) snack bags (peanuts, fruit snacks) name tags (pilot, co-pilot, and flight attendant)

5. Open-ended questions
Where can an airplane take us to? What does a flight attendant do? What is the job of a pilot? Have you ever been on an airplane? What do we bring on the plane? Why does a plane slow down when it is almost at its destination? Where do you want to travel to?

6. Extension activity
Have the children use chairs to create an airplane with two front seats for the pilot and co-pilot. Behind them can be two rows of chairs for children who can be the passengers. There should be enough room in between the two rows for a flight attendant to go back and forth. The pilots can navigate the plane while the flight attendance passes out snacks for the passengers. *In addition, the teacher should make flash card plane tickets with seat numbers on them (A1, B2, etc) as well as seat numbers on the chairs to give children a chance to use their literacy knowledge to identify their seat.

I'm a little airplane, (children raise arms at sides to shoulder height) Now watch me fly! (They spin one of their arms in front of them as if it were a propeller) Here are my instruments From down low to up high. (With their other arm, they reach from the ground to above their heads.) First I get revved up. (Children make engine noises while still spinning their arms.) Then I can fly, (Children raise arms to shoulder height.) Lifting off the runway (They start walking forward.) Up into the sky! (They go up on their tiptoes and continue to move forward. Let them circle awhile before returning to their original positions.)
