2
ABO System Some red blood cells have agglutinogens.
There are several types of blood agglutinogens. Blood types are determined by the ABO system.
3
Rhesus Factor (Rh) No Rh in blood = negative blood
Rh found in blood = positive blood ABO + Rh system = 8 different blood types No ABO agglutinogen + Rh = O positive blood
4
Antibodies Plasma contains antibodies
Antibodies: act against agglutinogens that they do not already possess Agglutinins = antibodies Antibodies bind with different agglutinogens in order to neutralize them
5
TranSfusion - A blood transfusion is when a product of blood (usually RBC) is given to another person. - Major risk when transfusing blood: Combining an agglutinin and its agglutinogen in the body of the person receiving the blood. This can cause agglutination.
6
Blood Compatibility - Blood can only receive the agglutinogens they already have. - If the blood receives the agglutinogens they don’t have, the recipient’s antibodies will agglutinate with the RBC of the foreign blood.
7
Game Time True or False Person with agglutinogen A blood can receive from B blood. _________ Person with agglutinogen B blood can receive from O blood. _________ Person with agglutinogen O blood can receive from all blood types. _________
