3iEF Model of making the classroom an Interesting Place: Experience from a Police Training Academy Dr. Nikhil J. Gupta IPS Dy. Director SVP National Police Academy, Hyderabad
2
The Problem at SVPNPA is of Trainees tending to sleep too often
IPS training includes heavy outdoor training in early morning Followed by heavy breakfast AC rooms Sleep + Lack of Concentration Lecture method …..A major factor for above problem Objective is to make the classroom more vibrant and interesting place by changing the training methodology
3
Effective Learning is not about Just Sermoning like a Sage
“It’s not teaching that causes learning. Attempts by the learner to perform causes learning, dependent on the opportunities to perform, and the quality of feedback.” -Grant Wiggins Given a learning objective (a topic, a course, etc.), following factors are important for active learning: Interest Involvement Interaction Evaluation Feedback Model 3iEF

Teacher’s Role in the 3iEF Model of Effective Learning is to Facilitate
In active learning, the teacher moves from being the “Sage on the stage” to the “Guide on the side” Teachers become coaches, guides, sources of information, experience and encouragement. Thus, the role of the teacher becomes a “facilitator” rather than “disseminator”.
7
Challenges Faced and Overcoming the Challenges
No major challenges Initial reaction “Is it wastage of Time?’ Enthusiasm of faculty and making it a part of every class. Slowly becomes a habit and they look forward to it
8
What works and what does not?
The two way communication, Involvement and Interaction works Those who are shy, less talkative also get opportunity. A Sage on the stage doesn't work but a guide on the side does.
9
Impact of implementing the 3iEF Model of Learning
Encouraging results Less sleeping More concentration Better results/Evaluation Healthier/ Vibrant environment in the classrooms.
10
Replicability and Sustainability
Easy to replicate in all learning environments No costs, technicalities, instruments etc Sustainable because confirms to scientific models of learning like Kolb’s learning cycle and adult learning.
11
Lessons Learnt A small change in the approach to training of adults (3iEF Model). Encouraging results From Boring to Encouraging and From Sleeping to Participating Adults can not be taught as children. Need to take into account their requirements and psychology.
