In an investigation, students performed the following steps and made some observations: (1) The students poured fresh water into a beaker and added a few drops of a chemical solution called bromthymol blue. The water in the beaker turned blue. (2) One student blew through a straw into the water in the beaker. The water in the beaker turned yellow. (3) The students then placed some waterweed (a plant) into the water in the beaker and placed the beaker under a bright light. (4) After a short period of time, the students observed the beaker. The water had turned blue again and there were bubbles on the waterweed leaves.
2
The water changed from blue to yellow when the student blew into it (step 2). Identify the compound that caused the water to change from blue to yellow. Explain why the water turned blue again when the beaker with the waterweed was under the bright light (step 4). In your explanation, identify the process that caused this change. Explain why there were bubbles on the waterweed leaves (step 4). Write the complete equation for the process that caused the changes in step 4. You may use words or symbols in your equation.

5. Which of the following statements describes a difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration in plants? A. Photosynthesis occurs only during the day, whereas cellular respiration occurs only at night. B. Photosynthesis involves only one reaction, whereas cellular respiration involves many steps. C. Photosynthesis occurs only in cells containing chlorophyll, but cellular respiration occurs in all cells. D. Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy, but cellular respiration converts light energy into heat energy.

8. In periods of hot, dry weather, the pores on the leaf surfaces of most plants close in order to reduce water loss during the day. When these pores are closed, plants cannot take in carbon dioxide. As a direct result, the rate of which of the following processes decreases? A. cellular respiration B. mitosis C. nitrogen fixation D. photosynthesis

9. Plants absorb solar energy during photosynthesis
9. Plants absorb solar energy during photosynthesis. The graph below represents how this energy is distributed in some plants. Which of the following statements describes what happens to the energy represented by the section labeled X? A. It is recycled to the Sun. B. It is consumed by decomposers. C. It is lost to the soil and the atmosphere. D. It is used for cellular respiration and maintenance

10. Mallory has four aquatic plants of the same size and species
10. Mallory has four aquatic plants of the same size and species. She submerges each plant in a separate beaker filled with 200 mL of water. She then sets each beaker under a different intensity of light. Mallory observes that, of the four plants, the plant in the beaker under the most intense light gives off the most gas bubbles in a 20 min period. Explain Mallory’s findings.

11. What will most likely be the result if all of the mitochondria are removed from a plant cell?
A It will be unable to carry out respiration. B It will lose water through osmosis. C It will break down the ribosomes in the cell. D It will be unable to photosynthesize.
