Welcome back! Today we have a POP PRACTICE multiple choice released exam Before you  Know that this is to practice the stamina and pacing that you will need! It will not be graded for correct answers, it will be entered into your grade as a WORK HABIT grade. Did you complete it? Were you able to manage time? Relax  This also serves as a study tool to review potential questions and topics, they will be graded so you can use the information to study.

5 Chapter 12 – key points Portugal in the Americas – sugar plantations on the eastern coast of South America and contributed greatly to the Slave trade Holy Roman Empire – post 1200’s incorporated large sections of land to the north and east, leaders came from the House of Habsburg Protestant Reformation – people wanted a deeper religious experience, were not satisfied and wanted to be able to read and interpret bible (a leader -> Martin Luther) Counter-Reformation – the Catholic churches responds by reaffirming doctrines and practices along with focusing on a more individual religious experience and church leaders became more pious Mughal Empire – consolidates most of modern day India, profits from Indian ocean trade and is strengthened under Akbar (military) Conquistadores – Spanish explorers who came to the New World (Americas) Encomiedas – grants from the Spanish crown to help Spanish enslave the natives and exploit the land and resources Aztec Empire – had constant wars with in the empire that allowed for Cortes to negotiate alliances with Aztec’s enemies – this was crucial to his conquest Inca Empire – Pizarro wanted to follow in Cortes’s footsteps and conquered the fractioned empire in much the same manner Columbian Exchange – refers to the trade between Europeans and the Americas -> crops, animals and diseases, natural resources

7 Chapter 13 – Key terms Mercantilism – the idea that the wealth of a country must come from other countries – Europeans used this idea to drive their colonization of the Americas and Africa Chartered Companies – companies of merchants who were protected by the crown and given the right to work and trade in a particular area – a monopoly of sorts The African Slave Trade – Slaves were taken from the West coast of Africa and used in the Americas to grow and produce goods that were then taken back to Europe Dutch East India Company – goal was to secure a trade monopoly where ever it could (operated in the east (China & India) – this was a chartered company – there was much competition for markets Ming China Falls- administrative and economic difficulties weakened daily life, natural disasters destroyed their ability to respond Qing Dynasty – headed by the Manchus, secured and emerged as a force in early 1600’s in China and incorporated new territories Copy down key points OR check through your notes to high light these or add to them We start reviewing comparison writing at 9:15am – we will have a practice write
