3.  The word “buy” has connotations of objects which suggest Claudio simply views Hero as an object but the word “jewel” displays his admiration for her and shows how he is looking at marriage for status but also adores Hero.

5.  Displays Claudio’s selfish and rude nature as he insults Hero to ensure she is shamed in front of everybody and emphasises his selfishness as he doesn’t care about her feelings and demonstrates a lack of compassion

7.  This quote shows that he is a favourite of Don Pedro which demonstrates his loyalty especially to Don Pedro and presents him as a hero and an honourable young man to the reader at the beginning of the play.

8.  “Tis certain so the prince woos for himself”

9.  This demonstrates Claudio’s naivety as he easily believes the lies of Don John his former enemy and instantly believes that Don Pedro has betrayed him even though he is a favourite of Don Pedro and was willing to fight for him valiantly in war
