Vocabulary Musical: a play where the characters sing songs to help tell the story Opera: a play set entirely (usually) to music Operetta: a short opera, usually on a light or humorous theme and typically having spoken dialogue. Notable composers of operettas include Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Lehár, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Classic vs. Modern Musical: story lines and musical styles help differentiate between classic and modern musicals (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Oklahoma!, Fiddler on the Roof are classics, while Phantom of the Opera, RENT, and Shrek are modern)
