2. What does SAT stand for?
Statutory Assessment Test! in English and Maths.
Who should take the tests? All children working at levels 3 – 5.
Level 6 papers available and decisions made in next few weeks.

3. Don’t Panic!!! SATs are not the be all and end all of LIFE!
Most importantly, children should learn: ‘Skills for Life’.
BUT, it is our job to encourage and guide the children so that they can achieve their best ready for transfer to secondary school.

4. Special Arrangements
Some SEND- A small number of pupils may qualify for ‘additional time’. 25% extra given ( normal classroom practice)
NB: ANY CHILD, AT ANY TIME, IN ANY TEST(except the reading test!) CAN HAVE QUESTIONS READ TO THEM IF THEY ASK. Normal classroom practice

5. What happens after the tests?
Test papers must be sent to external markers no later than 48 hours after completion of the last test.
Marked/ scanned scripts will be returned to schools in July.
Results shared with pupils and parents.
Life after SATs! - Residential, Secondary Liaison, getting secondary school ready, and end of year celebrations.

6. English Test Reading Test – 1 hour read and answer questions.
Spelling & Grammar Test –
Part 1 – 45 minutes Grammar and Punctuation
Part 2 – Spelling up to 30 minutes

7. What is the English grammar, punctuation and spelling test?
English grammar, punctuation and spelling – Paper 1 comprises 40 to 50 short-answer questions covering grammar, punctuation and vocabulary, taking 45 minutes
Paper 2 is a spelling test with 20 questions, taking approximately 15 minutes.

10. Narrative It’s a Mystery A mystery story starts with these words:

Your task is to continue the beginning of the mystery story by describing what it was like through the door.

11. Descriptive Writing It’s my favourite meal
Think about your favourite meal.
What do you like about it?
How would you describe it to someone who has never tasted it?
Think of its appearance, how it smells and what it tastes like.
Think about what makes the meal special.
Your task is to write a description of your favourite meal for someone who has never tasted it.

12. Persuasive Leaflet Sea World
A new Sea World centre has just been built to give people the chance to find out more about endangered species.
Now the owners need a leaflet, to tell people all there is to see and do. It should persuade them to visit the centre.
Now you must produce the writing to go in the leaflet.
You should think about:
reasons why people should come to the centre;
what there is to see and do; other useful information.

13. Newspaper Article Feature article: Meeting Oran
You are going to write a feature article about Oran for a magazine.
Readers of the magazine want to find out as much as possible about him, his planet and his life there.
Imagine that you have interviewed Oran to collect information for your article.
Remember you can also use clues from the whole reading booklet ‘Footprints in Space’ to help you make up a complete picture of Oran and his planet.

14. Reading Entire reading mark goes on this test
English reading – one paper based on reading comprehension of three texts, with a total of 35 to 40 questions of increasing difficulty.
Children are allowed one hour in total, including reading time.

In addition, high-achieving children may be entered for Level 6 SATs papers in the same subjects.

21. Teacher Assessment
Levels given for the different areas of English, Maths and Science.
An overall subject level is given for each subject.
Most important method for assessing children as this relates to attainment throughout the key stage and especially during the whole of Year 6.

Comparative school results.
National results.

23. What can WE do? Homework Revision timetable
Experience of previous papers
Practise timings of writing (every week)
Practise times tables & mental skills
Practise writing to speed (legible!)
Practise spellings of common words.
Encourage reading(short stories & other)

24. What equipment do pupils need?
Nothing!
We provide all equipment.
If pupils do bring own pencil case, must be transparent.
Any equipment has to be checked before it can be used.
Refreshments? Have water as usual and can bring in a ‘snack’.

25. What happens if a child is ill?
No test = no level!
Can arrange for test to be taken later in the day, or at home, as long as security and confidentiality of the test is not compromised.

1. Take an interest
2. Play games to reinforce learning
3. Find opportunities for learning at home
4. Practice when you are ‘out & about’
5. Balance/ Relaxation
6. Preparation - various resources available, including study guides.
7. Make a revision timetable
8. Staying healthy (sleep, exercise, food, water)
9. Be positive ! As long as your child does their best, then they have succeeded.
