Weathering And Erosion

Weathering The process that breaks down rock and other substances on Earth’s Surface. Weathering. clip.asf

Two Types of Weathering Mechanical Weathering Examples: A type of weathering in which rocks are physically broken into smaller pieces. A physical change includes change in size and shape. Freezing and thawing, animal actions, abrasion..

Release of Pressure Abrasion Freezing and Thawing.

Chemical Weathering Chemical change caused by a chemical reaction. One substance changes into another. Example: Iron + Water + oxygen = Rust Chemical Weathering Clip Chemical_Weathering.video

Water Water weathers rock by dissolving it.

Oxygen Water + Oxygen +Iron = RUST When water and oxygen mix with Iron it creates rust. This is called oxidation.

Carbon Dioxide Carbon dioxide dissolves in rain water and produces Carbonic acid. This Carbonic acid easily weathers marble and Limestone. Cave_formation video clipCave_formation video clip

Living Organisms Some plants and animals can produce weak acids that chemically weather the rock. Rock meets Lichen

Acid Rain Acid Rain video When pollution from the air contaminates the rain, it causes rapid chemical weathering.

Erosion

The movement of rock and particles by wind, water, ice or gravity. What_Is_Erosion video clip Erosion video clip

Difference between weathering and erosion Weathering breaks earth down and erosion moves the broken pieces around. 1 min video segment on weathering and erosion

Sediment Deposition Gravity Is the material moved by erosion. Occurs where the agents of erosion lay down the sediment. (drop it off) The force that moves rock and other sediment downhill. Gravity causes mass movement of sediment. water running down hill.asf How do Glaciers shape the Earth

Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition act together in a cycle that wears down and builds up Earth’s surface. Erosion Weathering Deposition mass movement animation

Weathering breaks it. Erosion moves it. Deposition drops it. What is it? Sediment! Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition 60secs StudyJams Weathering and Erosion

Warm-up #1 1.What is the difference between weather and weathering? 2.List the five types of Mechanical weathering. 3.Describe two of the five types of mechanical weathering.

Warm-up #2 When Carbon Dioxide mixes with water what does it form? It forms carbonic acid which weathers limestone and marble What type of weathering breaks down rock through chemical changes? Chemical weathering What causes a bike to rust? What does this have to do with the weathering of rock? When the metal mixes with water and oxygen it changes to rust. The metal in rocks can rust causing the rock to break down.

Warm-Up # 3 1.What is the difference between chemical and mechanical weathering? 2.What type of weathering is freezing and thawing? 3.What are 3 factors that can effect the rate of weathering? 4.What did you learn from the Chalk it up to Weathering lab?

Warm up #4 1.What is the difference between weathering, erosion and deposition 2.Most chemical weathering is caused by what? 3.What factors effect the rate of weathering? 4.What is the difference between Mechanical and Chemical weathering?

Warm-up # 5 1.What are the forces that cause erosion? 2.What is the dominant process that causes erosion? 3.The steeper the slope of the mountain the __________ erosion occurs. 4.What weathers limestone and marble? 5.What causes metal to oxidize? 6.What is sediment?

Warm-up # 6 What is a contour interval? The space between contour lines. When Carbon Dioxide mixes with water what does it form? Carbonic Acid and it weathers limestone and marble. What is mass movement of rock? What causes it? When large amounts of rock fall or move due to the force of gravity. What are small, solid particles of rock or organisms called? Sediment
