2. You learned earlier that the value of an improper faction must be equal to or greater than 1. Fractions such as 4/4 , 5/4 , 6/4 , etc., are improper fractions.

3. 5/4 > 1 4/4 = 1 5/4 = 1 and ¼, which is written 1 ¼
5/4 > 1 4/4 = 1 5/4 = 1 and ¼, which is written 1 ¼ . This is called a mixed number. It is made up of two parts: 1= whole number ¼ = proper fraction

4. Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
An improper fraction can be changed into a mixed number either by using the method just shown (drawing) or by dividing. Recall that the line separationg the 5 and 4 means that the numerator is being divided by the denominator:
