RATES OF REACTION CHAPTER 17
2
CHEMICAL KINETICS Branch of chemistry concerned with rates and mechanisms of chemical reactions. Reaction Rate- The speed of a chemical reaction
3
HOW IS REACTION RATE MEASURED? # of moles of reactant used in a certain time period # of moles of product made in a certain time period
4
WHAT IS THE COLLISION THEORY? Particles must collide in order to react
5
WHAT IS AN EFFECTIVE COLLISION? Proper angle and proper amount of energy
6
WHAT ARE THE TWO FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE RATE? Frequency of collisions Effectiveness of collisions
7
ACTIVATION ENERGY Minimum amount of energy needed to start the reaction
8
REACTION MECHANISM Series of steps by which reacting particles rearrange themselves to form products
9
EXAMPLE OF A REACTION MECHANISM
10
ACTIVATED COMPLEX Short lived particles that has the highest energy in the reaction. It either breaks down into reactants or moves forward to become products.
11
RATE DETERMINING STEP The slowest step in the reaction.
12
