1 April P. Jones, Lead Counselor ESC West Vision Promoting meaningful opportunities for students in foster care to achieve and maintain educational stability and academic success. FOSTERING EDUCATION SUMMER CAMP

2 Beyond the Bell Outdoor Education Program Mission The Beyond the Bell Office of Outdoor and Environmental Education is committed to providing “once in a lifetime” authentic and meaningful, hands-on active learning experiences. We facilitate activities that create an emotional investment in personal and team success. Our programs allow students to be physically active, have innate curiosity, encourages discovery, and are project based.

3 Camp Locations We will be providing two summer camp locations: Clear Creek Outdoor Education Center 19635 Angeles Forest Highway La Canada, CA 91011 This camp site is located in the Angeles Forest Mountains. Clear Creek Education Center is an immersive, hands-on experience for fourth through sixth graders to inspire them in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Students will learn these skills while enjoying nature and building positive relationships with their peers. All programs are standards based and are being articulated (with the support of OCISS) to comply with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards (as we anticipate them to be adopted by CDE).

4 Camp Locations Point Fermin Marine Center 3200 S. Alma Street San Pedro, CA 90731 Science at Sea at Point Fermin Outdoor Education Center Students will participate in a real world application of practices and procedures used to extract samples in coastal ecosystems. Students will make observations, apply content knowledge and analyze their samples using college grade microscopes and laboratory equipment. Teams share findings in addition to defending theories and conclusions. The Battleship USS Iowa Our partners, NASA, UCLA, Department of Navy and Department of Water and Power, are working with us to provide experiential demonstrations and exhibits highlighting innovations that have a civilian use. The location, right in the middle of the Port of Los Angeles, is a living example of one of the world’s most vibrant economic hubs. The focus is on making STEM skills relevant and concrete.
