The Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles
6
What is Carbon? Carbon is an element that is in all living things. Molecules containing carbon are called Organic.
7
The Carbon Cycle Plants take in CO 2 because they need carbon and oxygen to use in photosynthesis. When animals eat plants they use some of the carbon containing compounds to grow Some carbon-containing compounds are used to release energy by respiration.
8
Carbon Cycle Keep in mind all living things have carbon in them, so when they die, decomposers help return that carbon to the environment and soil.
10
Disruptions in carbon cycle Carbon in the environment is used to make coal, oil, and natural gas (fossil fuels). –Humans burn Fossil fuels in a process called Combustion releases too much CO2 back into the air. –Burning of Fossil fuels causes global warming. CFC’s deplete the ozone layer
11
Remainder of class time Finish carbon cycle webquest Finished with carbon? Complete your homework.
12
Write Nitrogen cycle on the top of right side of booklet Glue in picture directly underneath Write what is in red
13
Living organisms need nitrogen to make proteins The air is 79% nitrogen which is inert (most living things can’t use N2 in gas form) Nitrogen fixing changes N 2 into a useable form to be taken in by plant’s roots This happens by lightning, nitrogen – fixing bacteria and artificial fertilizers The Nitrogen Cycle
14
Nitrogen Cycle Animals eat the plants and therefore take in nitrogen. When animals and plants die, decomposers help return the nitrogen to the soil. Other bacteria then change the nitrogen in the soil back into a gas to be released back into the air.
15
AIR N 2 AIR N 2
16
Disruption in nitrogen cycle Humans use fertilizers with added nitrogen on their crops –causes nitrate to leach into groundwater –Can deplete oxygen in water and reduce animal populations
17
On the back answer these questions 1. Where does carbon come from in an ecosystem? 2. How have humans intruded on the carbon cycle? 3. Why is nitrogen important in the environment? 4. What is nitrogen fixation? 5. How have humans intruded on the nitrogen cycle?
