PURPOSE: TO FAMILIARIZE DRIVER CANDIDATES WITH HAZARDS INVOLVED WITH DRIVING MILITARY VEHICLES AND TO DISCUSS ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE MEASURES EVERY VEHICLE OPERATOR MUST USE.

ARMY MOTOR VEHICLE(AMV) SAFETY OBJECTIVE IS TO PROVIDE TRAINING AND GUIDANCE TO OPERATORS OF ALL AMVs TO ENABLE THEM TO SAFELY TRANSPORT PEOPLE AND PROPERTY WITH THE LEAST POSSIBLE RISK THE ARMY PRIVATELY OWNED VEHICLE (POV) SAFETY OBJECTIVES TO PROVIDE TRAINING AND GUIDANCE TO REDUCE THE RISK OF DEATH OR INJURY FROM POV ACCIDENTS ASK WHAT IS MOST COMMON CAUSE OF DRIVING ACCIDENTS? DRIVER ERROR

DRIVER SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES ALL DRIVERS OF ARMY VEHICLES WILL:
OPERATE VEHICLES IN A SAFE AND PRUDENT MANNER REPORT UNSAFE OPERATING CONDITIONS REPORT ALL ACCIDENTS TO THEIR SUPERVISOR AND TO MOTOR POOL OBEY ALL STATE, LOCAL, AND MILITARY MOTOR VEHICLE REGULATIONS AND LAWS UNSAFE CONDITIONS: FOUND DURING PMCS REPORT ON DA 2404 OR VERBALLY TO SUPERVISOR AND MOTOR SERGEANT/DISPATCHER

ENSURE YOU AND YOUR PASSENGERS WEAR THEIR SEAT BELTS AND OTHER SAFETY RESTRAINTS AT ALL TIMES WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOVING USE GROUND GUIDES WHEN YOUR VIEW IS OBSTRUCTED OR IN CONGESTED AREAS (e.g. MOTOR POOL) INFORM YOUR SUPERVISOR IF YOU ARE USING ANY MEDICATION THAT IMPAIRS YOUR ABILITY TO SAFELY OPERATE A VEHICLE

DRIVER ERROR IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF MOST AMV/POV ACCIDENTS
PROPER SELECTION, TRAINING, AND SUPERVISION OF DRIVERS WILL HELP PREVENT THESE ERRORS COMMANDERS MUST ENSURE ALL AMV DRIVERS ARE LICENSED IAW AR AND HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM STANDARDS (HSPS) # 4 ASK WHAT IS MOST COMMON CAUSE OF DRIVING ACCIDENTS? DRIVER ERROR DISCUSS TYPES OF DRIVER ERRORS SPEEDING, DUI, CARELESSNESS, SHOWING OFF, INATTENTION, ANGRY

MOTIVATING SAFE PERFORMANCE
DRIVERS AND ASSISTANT DRIVERS SHOULD BE ASSIGNED TO VEHICLES GIVE RECOGNITION TO SAFE VEHICLE OPERATORS SUPERVISORS MUST: SET STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE FOR DRIVERS PERIODICALLY ASSESS DRIVER PERFORMANCE AND REWARD SAFE DRIVERS GIVES A SENSE OF OWNERSHIP AND ASSIGNS RESPONSIBILITY ASK SOLDIERS FOR INPUT ON WHAT WOULD MOTIVATE THEM

SAFE DRIVING PROCEDURES
DRIVERS WILL NOT DRIVE AN AMV FOR MORE THAN 10 CONTINUOUS HOURS OR 12 HOURS IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD, WITHOUT 8 HOURS REST IF MORE THAN 10 HOURS ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE MISSION, AN ASSISTANT DRIVER MUST BE ASSIGNED. DRIVERS WILL TAKE A 15 MINUTE REST BREAK EVERY 2-3 HOURS OF DRIVING OR EVERY MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST THE SENIOR OCCUPANT OF THE VEHICLE MUST ENSURE THAT ALL PASSENGERS COMPLY WITH THE SEAT/SHOULDER BELT REQUIREMENT. FOR TACTICAL VEHICLES WITH NO SEAT/SHOULDER BELTS, EACH PASSENGER MUST BE SEATED AND THE SECURITY STRAP FASTENED.

USING HEADPHONES OR EARPHONES WHILE DRIVING AMVs IS PROHIBITED
DURING REST BREAKS DRIVERS WILL INSPECT THEIR VEHICLES TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS USING HEADPHONES OR EARPHONES WHILE DRIVING AMVs IS PROHIBITED ALL DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS MUST WEAR THEIR SAFETY BELTS DRIVERS WILL NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL DURING THE 8 HOURS PRIOR TO THEIR DUTY OR DURING THEIR DUTY SHIFT SENIOR OCCUPANT OF VEHICLE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ENFORCING SAFETY BELT RULE

DRIVERS WILL NOT EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION
DRIVERS MUST PERFORM REQUIRED BEFORE DURING, AND AFTER OPERATION PMCS BEFORE PMCS MUST ENSURE THEIR VEHICLE HAS: PROPER FUNCTIONING STEERING, BRAKES, LIGHTS, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, MIRRORS, HORN, TURN SIGNALS, AND SAFETY BELTS IF BRAKES OR PARKING BRAKE IS NOT FUNCTIONING, THE VEHICLE IS NMC ANY VEHICLE WITH A CLASS III LEAK IS NMC VEHICLES WITH THE ABOVE CONDITIONS WILL NOT BE OPERATED UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY THE UNIT COMMANDER CLASS III LEAK; WHEN DROPS FALL FROM THE ITEM BEING INSPECTED

IF THE DRIVERS REAR VIEW IS OBSTRUCTED, GROUND GUIDES MUST BE USED
