Pages 107-111 Sabrina Buonamici, Laura Mustillo, Eleni Karatzas and Lauren Drummond The Anatomy of the Circulatory System
2
The Circulatory System Includes: – The heart – The heart chambers – The blood vessels of the heart – The blood vessels of the body (arteries, capillaries and veins)
3
The heart Top part is larger than the bottom Located between your lungs Protected by the rib cage Size of a closed fist
4
The heart chambers The heart has FOUR chambers 2 atria (upper part) 2 ventricles (lower part) The atrium opens into the ventricle below it. Function: To push blood out of the heart
5
Blood vessels of the heart Blood vessel: Channel in which blood circulates Pulmonary arteries: from heart to lungs Aorta: from heart to other organs Coronary vessels: give blood to heart Pulmonary veins: from lungs to heart Venae cavae: from organs to heart The heart is giving blood The heart is receiving blood
6
Blood vessels of the body Blood vessels run through the entire body Examples of blood vessels – Arteries – Capillaries – Veins
7
Arteries Carry blood from the heart to other organs Small arteries: arterioles Largest artery in the body: Aorta
8
Capillaries
9
Gas Exchange in capillaries -When cells pass through the capillaries, they receive nutritional substances and get rid of waste. -White blood cells pass through the capillaries and clean the red blood cells, through diapedesis. -Nutritional substances: - Oxygen Waste: -Carbon dioxide -Water
10
Veins Carry blood from other organs to the heart Small veins: are called venules
11
Mini quiz! 1)How many chambers does the heart have? 2) What is the largest artery in the body? 3) What are the three types of blood vessels? 4) What important exchange happens in the capillaries? 5) What are small veins called?
