Start your paragraph by addressing what the other side may say in their defense. The counterclaim for my argument is that…(tell them using 1 sentence) Example: The counterclaim for my argument is that banning bottled water limits consumer choice.

Give one piece of evidence that supports the other side’s argument. Ex: According to Scott, writer at Harvard Crimson, banning bottled water will cause students to buy less of it which may cause students to buy bottled soda instead. This is even worse for people’s health.

Explain why the counterclaim is weak using 2 sentences. Start with, “This argument is weak because…” Ex: This argument is weak because students can buy other things besides soda. They may buy juice or sports drinks too.

Explain a strength to your argument over the counterclaim’s. Another benefit is… Ex: Another benefit of some of these choices is that you can redeem those bottles for money. You cannot do that with water bottles which is why people throw them away.

Wrap up your thought with a strong point All in all, In summary, In conclusion… The counterclaim is weak because… Ex: All in all, the counterclaim is weak because it does not take into account the environmental damage done by supporting water bottles or the countless other choices students have besides soda.
