Indefinite Articles

Indefinite articles are NOT specific. They are the OPPOSITE of definite articles. Example: I want THE blouse that your gave me for my birthday. (This is a very specific blouse – therefore we use a definite article.) However: I want A blouse. (This is just any blouse – non specific – therefore we use an indefinite article.)

Some other examples of INDEFINITE articles: I want an apple. (Any apple – non-specific) I want shoes. (Any shoes – non specific.) I like cherries. (Any cherries – non specific)

She has a book. (Any book – not specific) They have IPODS. (Any IPODS – not specific) We own a car. (Any car – not specific) You have a back pack. (Any back pack – not specific)

In English the indefinite article is expressed by the words: a or an if the word (noun) is singular (one of an item). In English the indefinite article is expressed by NOTHING!!!! If the word (noun) is plural (more than one item). Examples: Singular: I would like A banana. Plural: Im looking for tomatoes.

In French the indefinite article is expressed by: UN – if the word (noun) is masculine UNE – if the word (noun) is feminine DES – if the word (noun) is plural

Examples: I am listening to a DVD. Jécoute un DVD. I am pointing to tomatoes. Jindique des tomates. I like pineapples. Jaime des ananas.
