Task Force Presentation (1) Project X & Muon Accelerator Program Feasibility path to Neutrino Factory/Muon Collider Project X upgrade – 4MW proton beam at 8GeV Reformatting of beam – Pulsed Linac beam out of Project X – 15Hz; single bunch of <3ns bunch length
4
Task Force Presentation (2) Project X upgrade – Average beam current 5mA – Peak beam current 10mA – Pulse linac operation rep rate 15Hz – Pulsed linac duty factor 10% (pulse length of 6.7ms) Reformatting of beam – Rings Accumulator and Compressor ~200m with h=8 – Delivery trombone system to form “single bunch”
5
Project X Solution(1) Details of Project X Impact of proposed upgrade – Front end: no impact – CW linac: depends upon 3GeV program Coupler optimization for running 5mA (10% duty cycle) and another possible current (90% duty cycle) – Pulsed linac: straight forward More RF power (higher current) Upgrade power couplers (higher current) More cryo capacity (longer pulse) – Conventional facilities: started investigating More water cooling More Klystrons (more floor space)
6
Project X Solution(2) Expect to “reuse” >75% of the cost of Project X Pulsed Linac Couplers – 2KW to 15KW Pulsed RF Power – 125KW/cavity Klystrons available Cryo capacity for Pulsed Linac: increase by 30% CW Linac Coupler: setting optimization for future 3GeV and pulsed linac average currents
