6 Livingston and Future Accelerators (here e+/e- and p)
FCC HiLumi LHC FAIR ILC/CEPC E-XFEL LEP2 LHeC ERL SuperKEKb SwissFEL ESS My remarks as input to strategic discussions (ECFA, …): FCC and CEPC are important studies. Their parameters and costs should be known to make informed decisions. We are part of it… It is too risky to bet all HEP future only on very big projects. No accelerator project with cost > 2B€ approved since LHC approval. Particle physics should support plan B developed in parallel for the 2030’s. Difficult to get even small funding for European study. LBNL LWFA 2014 Hadron acc. project Lepton acc. project Hadron acc. proposal Lepton acc. proposal R. Assmann, EuCARD2, 4/2015

28 Envisaged Implementation
Goal is to design one operational facility at one location. Resources will be distributed to all partners: Model of big particle physics detector: Many institutes team up to build one detector at one place, each contributing a part. Site study with the goal to propose the best site: Existing infrastructure, host lab support, scientific user community, support from funding agency, … Facility will be devoted to provide for pilot users: Ultra-compact X-ray FEL Ultra-compact GeV electron source for HEP detector development R. Assmann, EuCARD2, 4/2015

29 EuPRAXIA Result R. Assmann, EuCARD2, 4/2015

30 EuPRAXIA Result Citation from EU Report
The expected impact under the relevant topic is very high and can put Europe in a leading role at global level in advanced plasma based acc. EuPRAXIA will provide a dedicated user area for developing and commissioning the latest HEP detector. It will have also impact on international cooperation via a strategic vision for bringing plasma accelerators to the users and to the market. The study enhances and strengthens the new knowledge and innovations in accelerator technology and related scientific and technological areas, such as laser science, high energy physics, photon science and detectors. The proposal has an important indirect social impact in medical applications. The proposal contributes to a good extent to innovation and integration of new knowledge. R. Assmann, EuCARD2, 4/2015

31 EuPRAXIA Result: Future?
Proposal rated with excellent outcome: grade 14/15 Comments by reviewers: Scientific and technical approach confirmed! Importance for the European research landscape confirmed! Impact on European science, technology and industry confirmed! Readiness for the next step confirmed! Minor comments on organizational issues! Placed on the reserve list for funding by EU. Funding unlikely. If no funding received: Wait for next opportunity in 2016? Continue with 1-2 week-long workshops on EuPRAXIA (budget?)? R. Assmann, EuCARD2, 4/2015

39 Conclusion WP7 (EuroNNAc2) is growing and developing concepts. Preparing the grand vision for novel accelerators with applications for science, medicine and society. Novel accelerators should give us more science for the money (cost and size) or open new parameters. Price to pay: Technical complexity and difficulty. EuPRAXIA reviewed very well, unfortunately not enough funding at EU for funding all excellent European initiatives. Future??? Preparing 2nd European Advanced Accelerator Concepts workshop in Elba in 2015. Other initiatives ongoing  F3iA R. Assmann, EuCARD2, 4/2015

40 Focus: Future Frontiers in Accelerators “F3iA 2016”
Northern Germany Goal: Small workshop (20-30 persons) By invitation only Remote location (German island?) Only few prepared talks Brainstorming future accelerators Strawman design work Results published commonly Organizers R. Assmann, DESY F. Zimmermann, CERN
