Utopian & Dystopian Societies By: Aaron Marsh

What defines a society? ▪ A society is defined by how the environment is. Is it good, bad, or both, the two classifications are utopian and dystopian. Utopian means good and a perfect society. Dystopian however, is quite the opposite, this type of society is a very awful society. Nobody is happy in these societies.

Examples ▪ Utopian ▪ Village-”The Messenger” ▪ Emerald City- “The wizard of OZ” ▪ Jerusalem- “The Bible” ▪ Atlantis- Greek Mythology ▪ Heaven- Christianity, Catholicism ▪ Merica ▪ Dystopian ▪ Community from- “The Giver” ▪ Capital City-”The Hunger Games” ▪ Chicago-”Divergent” ▪ London-”V for Vendetta” ▪ Europe-WW2 ▪ North Korea

Characteristics ▪ Utopian ▪ Peaceful government ▪ Equality for citizens ▪ Access to education, healthcare, employment, and so on. ▪ A safe environment ▪ Dystopian ▪ Usually a controlling and oppressive government or no government ▪ Extreme poverty, hunger, conflicts between poor and the rich, illiteracy, Little or no education. ▪ Controlling propaganda ▪ Free thinking and independent thought is banned.

Game ▪ A series of descriptions will be put up the objective is to define it as utopian and dystopian ▪ Round 1 -Easy ▪ Corrupt Government ▪ No education ▪ Violent police ▪ Equal treatment ▪ Tyrant government

Game ▪ Round 4-Hard ▪ Rich treated the poor harshly ▪ Civilians revolted and overthrew Royal government ▪ They killed all royal families' ▪ New government helped the poor ▪ Made fairer laws ▪ Made free thought legal
