Turn in your syllabus and lab safety form in the folder at the front table. Pick up a Focus Lesson from the front desk. Immediately begin the work below: This class you are going to complete the Definition Column of the Handout- use a text book to define the words. This should be a REVIEW of middle school science. You have 10 minutes BELL WORK

When you’ve finished… ◦ Return text books to the cart. ◦ One person from your table group should collect the FCIM handouts. ◦ You will get a group folder. This is where your focus lessons will be stored for the rest of the year. ◦ The other members of the group should take out their interactive notebooks. ◦ Desks should be cleared of all materials except for the notebook and a writing utensil. You have 1 minute

Science Notebooks ◦ Open up your notebook : ◦ Write your name, class period, the class website on the inside cover. (www.edwhitebiology.weebly.com)www.edwhitebiology.weebly.com ◦ Number the pages (1-50) of your science notebook- the table of contents is on page 1. ◦ Page 2 is the back of Page 1 ◦ Odds will be on the RIGHT ◦ Evens will be on the LEFT You have 5 minutes

Today’s Objective ◦ SWBAT trace the steps of the scientific method. ◦ SWBAT gather and demonstrate use of scientific data.

How will we get there? ◦ Last class ◦ Reviewed syllabus ◦ Practiced Procedures ◦ Defined Class Rules ◦ This class ◦ FCIM ◦ Basic Concepts ◦ Notes ◦ Scientific Method, Experiments, Measurement/Dat a, Biology ◦ Flavor Longevity Lab Were you absent? Check the calendar

What is Science ? ◦ Please, silently open up your interactive notebook to page 5. ◦ We are skipping pages 2-4 ◦ In the top margin please answer the question: What is Science? 5 What is science? ________________________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________

Notes: Right Hand Side Page 5 Scientific Method Problem: What do you want to answer? Research: Who else has tried to answer this question? What did they find? Hypothesis: Based on your research, what do you think the answer to your problem will be? Experiment: Collect data using a procedure Analysis: What does your data mean? Conclusion: Which answer does your data support? Peer Review: Let other scientists see it!

Reflect on these notes! Page 4 ◦ On the top half of page 4 ◦ Diagram/ Draw the steps of the scientific method ◦ Use arrows to show how you think they are connected ◦ Is it a straight line? ◦ Is it a cycle? ◦ USE COLOR! There are colored pencils in your pencil case You have 5 minutes

Notes: Page 5 (THIS ALL HAS TO FIT!!) Experiment Variables : factors, traits, conditions which can be changed Independent Variable : What the scientist changes, or controls Dependent Variable: What the scientist observes, measures Measurement Science uses the METRIC system DataEx. meter, liter, gram Tables : Organize data Graphs : Visual display of data Biology The science of living things

Reflect on these notes: Bottom Half of Page 4 ◦ Copy the following diagram onto the bottom half of the page. ◦ USE COLOR! D ependent I ndependent Independent Variable (unit) Dependent Variable (unit) Derived/ Average Quantity (unit)

Practice What You’ve Learned: Page 7 Paste the following handout onto page 7 following the directions in the diagram below ◦ Listen carefully for directions for Pages 6 and 7 of your interactive notebook Step 1: Cut out, and flip your Step 2: Place 5 circles of glue Step 3: Glue onto handout over. your notebook

Flavor Longevity Lab Page 7: Right Side ◦ Flavor Longevity Lab Handout ◦ These are the procedures you need to follow to gather your data. ◦ READ THEM. ◦ As a table complete the handout to design your experiment. ◦ Raise your hand when you’ve designed your lab, and I will give you your materials. Page 6: Left Side ◦ Create a Data Table to organize your results ◦ Graph your data. Be sure to identify your independent and dependent variables so that your graph is labeled correctly.

Exit Slip: ◦ Answer the five questions, following our independent work procedures.
