CONFIDENTIAL 1 Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Metric Units of Mass Let’s warm up : Estimate and then measure the capacity of each object. 1)A juice box 2)A spoon 3)3 liters = ____ milliliters 4)9,000 milliliters = ____ liters 1) liters 2) milliliters 3) 3,000 milliliters 4) 9 liters

CONFIDENTIAL2 Let’s review what we did in the previous chapter Capacity: A measure of a dry or liquid volume of a container. Ounces are customary units of measurement. Milliliters are metric units. The jar contains 2 liters of milk.

CONFIDENTIAL3 Review Metric Units of Capacity 1,000 milliliters (ml) = 1 liter (L)  The cat consumes 2 liters of milk.  A spoon contains 3 ounce (oz) of liquid.  A can 1 liter of juice.  The cup holds 5 ounces of tea.

CONFIDENTIAL4 Review Convert liters to milliliters To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many milliliters is 4 liters? We are given, 4 liters = __ milliliters 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 liters = 4,000 milliliters 4 liters is equal to 4,000 milliliters.

CONFIDENTIAL5 Review Convert milliliters to liters To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many liters is 5,000 milliliters ? We are given, 5,000 milliliters = __ liters 5,000 ÷ 1000 = 5 5,000 milliliters = 5 liters 5,000 milliliters is equal to 5 liters.

CONFIDENTIAL6 Review Convert liters to milliliters To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many milliliters is 7 liters? We are given, 7 liters = __ milliliters 7 x 1,000 = 7,000 7 liters = 7,000 milliliters 7 liters is equal to 7,000 milliliters.

CONFIDENTIAL7 Review Convert milliliters to liters To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many liters is 12,000 milliliters ? We are given, 12,000 milliliters = __ liters 12,000 ÷ 1000 = 12 12,000 milliliters = 12 liters 12,000 milliliters is equal to 12 liters.

CONFIDENTIAL8 Today we will learn about the Metric Units of Mass MASS: It is the amount of matter that makes up an object. The mass of a math book is 1 kilogram.  Customary Units are used in US.  Metric Units are used by most countries.

CONFIDENTIAL9  The mass of a cat is 3 kilograms.  The mass of a ball is 150 grams.  The mass of a table is 17 kilograms.  The mass of a paper is 6 milligrams.

CONFIDENTIAL10 Metric Units of Mass 1 gram (g) = 1,000 milligrams (mg) 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g) Simple Conversion Tables When converting any unit of measurements if you want: To change to a larger unit, divide. To change to a smaller unit, multiply.

CONFIDENTIAL11 Convert grams to milligrams To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many milligrams is 4 grams? We are given, 4 grams = __ milligrams 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 grams = 4,000 milligrams 4 grams is equal to 4,000 milligrams.

CONFIDENTIAL12 Convert milligrams to grams To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many grams is 5,000 milligrams ? We are given, 5,000 milligrams = __ grams 5,000 ÷ 1000 = 5 5,000 milligrams = 5 grams 5,000 milligrams is equal to 5 grams.

CONFIDENTIAL13 Convert kilograms to grams To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many grams is 4 kilograms? We are given, 4 kilograms = __ grams 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 kilograms = 4,000 grams 4 kilograms is equal to 4,000 grams.

CONFIDENTIAL14 Convert grams to kilograms To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many kilograms is 5,000 grams ? We are given, 5,000 grams = __ kilograms 5,000 ÷ 1000 = 5 5,000 grams = kilograms 5,000 grams is equal to 5 kilograms.

CONFIDENTIAL17 Assignment Estimate and then measure the mass of each object. 1)A paper napkin 2)A football 1) milligrams 2) kilograms

CONFIDENTIAL18 Fill in the blanks: 3)____ gram (g) = 5,000 milligrams (mg) 4)7 gram (g) = _____ milligrams (mg) 5)____ gram (g) = 31,000 milligrams (mg) 6)51 gram (g) = _____ milligrams (mg) 3) 5 4) 7,000 5) 31 6) 51,000

CONFIDENTIAL19 Fill in the blanks: 7)____ kilogram (kg) = 56,000 grams (g) 8)23 kilogram (kg) = _____ grams (g) 9)____ kilogram (kg) = 3,000 grams (g) 10)9 kilogram (kg) = _____ grams (g) 7) 56 8) 23,000 9) 3 10) 9,000

CONFIDENTIAL20 Very Good! Let's Review MASS: It is the amount of matter that makes up an object. The mass of a math book is 1 kilogram.  Customary Units are used in US.  Metric Units are used by most countries. Metric Units of Mass 1 gram (g) = 1,000 milligrams (mg) 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g) Simple Conversion Tables

CONFIDENTIAL21 Review Convert grams to milligrams To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many milligrams is 4 grams? We are given, 4 grams = __ milligrams 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 grams = 4,000 milligrams 4 grams is equal to 4,000 milligrams.

CONFIDENTIAL22 Review Convert milligrams to grams To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many grams is 5,000 milligrams ? We are given, 5,000 milligrams = __ grams 5,000 ÷ 1000 = 5 5,000 milligrams = 5 grams 5,000 milligrams is equal to 5 grams.

CONFIDENTIAL23 Review Convert kilograms to grams To change to a smaller unit, multiply. Example: How many grams is 4 kilograms? We are given, 4 kilograms = __ grams 4 x 1,000 = 4,000 4 kilograms = 4,000 grams 4 kilograms is equal to 4,000 grams.

CONFIDENTIAL24 Review Convert grams to kilograms To change to a Larger unit, divide. Example: How many kilograms is 5,000 grams ? We are given, 5,000 grams = __ kilograms 5,000 ÷ 1000 = 5 5,000 grams = kilograms 5,000 grams is equal to 5 kilograms.

CONFIDENTIAL25 You have done a nice job. See you in the next session.
