Simile Compares two things that are alike in some way. Uses the words “like” or “as”. My love is like a red rose. You were as brave as a lion. They fought like cats and dogs. He is as funny as a barrel of monkeys.

Metaphor Metaphors also compare two things, but do not use “like” or “as”. They say that one thing IS another. Her voice is music to his ears The assignment was a breeze The snow is a white blanket The computers at school are old dinosaurs.

Personification Giving human characteristics to non-living things. Examples The sunlight danced across the sidewalk. Water on the lake shivers as the sun sets. That red jacket in the window is calling my name. My cell phone just died! The avalanche devoured anything standing in its way.
