Second Missionary Journey Background
Follows immediately after the Council of Jerusalem. This was a momentous event which acknowledged that the Law was not necessary for salvation – Faith in Christ Jesus (see 15:8-9) Reason is to take the Apostolic Letter to the Gentile churches N. Hammersley

Paul and Barnabas are chosen with Judas (Barsabbas) and Silas They take the letter north to Antioch Paul suggests that they go back to the churches of the First Missionary Journey Barnabbas wanted John Mark with them but Paul didn’t (he left the first mission 13:13)…a “have a sharp disagreement” and split up (15:39) About 50 – 52 AD N. Barnabas and John Mark go to Cyprus Paul chooses to go on with Silas. This disagreement does not show the early church in a positive light. But it does show Luke as an honest historian N. Hammersley

Paul meets Timothy; Greek father, Jewish mother…Paul circumcises him. N. Hammersley

Why does Paul circumcise Timothy? Council of Jerusalem said not necessary Timothy was a gentile to the Jews, but a Jew to the gentiles. So Paul is pragmatic He gives Timothy an identity Timothy now takes the place of John Mark as Paul’s student and confidante. N. Hammersley

At Troas, Paul’s vision “Come over to Macedonia and help us” (16:9) 16:11 “From Troas we put out to sea…” First “We Passage”; Is Luke with them? Sail to Samothrace- Neapolis- Philippi, a Roman colony. N. Hammersley

They arrive in Thessalonica Go to synagogue as usual Some success – Jews/ God-fearers/ important women Jealousy causes a riot at Jason's house Crowd say they are preaching treason At night Paul , Silas and Timothy smuggled out of the city N. Hammersley N. Hammersley

BEREA – contrast to Thessalonica Many Jews believed Crowd was after them (from Thessalonica) so Paul went on leaving Timothy and Silas Paul taken to Athens – to wait for the other two N. Hammersley
