Language Objective: I will write notes on citizen participation Opening: Think about the government we talked about yesterday. If your parents are the central government, and you and your brothers and sisters are the regional governments. Then which type of government best describes your family: unitary, confederation, or federal? Explain your answer.

Citizen Participation in Government

Autocracy Definition: One person possesses unlimited power.
Role of the citizen = The citizen has limited, if any, role in government.

Two Types of Autocracies
a- Monarchy Definition: Hereditary King or Queen b- Dictatorship Not hereditary Usually holds power using military

Autocrats- Monarchy Q- Would you want him as your leader?
Example: Louis XIV (14th!) Q- Would you want him as your leader? Q- What do you do if you don’t like your King?

Oligarchy Definition:
Government is run by a small group, often for corrupt and selfish purposes. Role of the citizen= The citizen has a very limited role.

Democracy Definition: The citizen has the power to vote
The citizens either make decisions directly or vote for representatives to make decisions for them. Role of the citizen = The people hold the power and elect leaders through free elections.

Presidential Democracy
Definition: Leader is called a president. Citizens vote directly for their leader.

Parliamentary Democracy
Definition: Leader is called a prime minister Citizens vote for the members of the parliament (legislature) those members then chose the prime minister
