The Impact of Industry on Nationalism Industrialization led to a growth of the middle class and strengthened their power. They demanded national independence and unity in many places across Europe Politicians and journalists channeled worker discontent into nationalism.

Unification of Italy (1859-1860) The middle class and nationalists in Italy wanted it to be united as a single country Count Camillo di Cavour pushed the Austrians out of Northern Italy and annexed it to the Kingdom of Piedmont. Giuseppe Garibaldi overthrew the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and joined with Camillo in 1860 to become a united Italy.

Unification of Germany (1863-1871) Prussia and Austria fought for leadership of Germany Prussia’s Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, used its military and diplomatic might to achieve unification. They made use of technology like the railroads to do this. After a series of wars, Germany was united in 1871 under the Kaiser of Germany.
