MILITARY CONVOY AND NIGHT DRIVING PHASE 9
2
TOPICS TO BE COVERED CONVOY DEFINITION ELEMENTS OF A MARCH COLUMN CONVOY IDENTIFICATION CHECK POINTS, HALTS, AND MAINTENANCE DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY NIGHT DRIVING
3
MILITARY CONVOY DEFINITION OF A CONVOY: –A GROUP OF SIX OR MORE VEHICLES ORGANIZED FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONTROL UNDER A SINGLE COMMANDER. –MAY BE BROKEN DOWN INTO: THE MARCH COLUMN: CONSISTS OF ALL VEHICLES INVOLVED IN A SINGLE MOVE OVER THE SAME ROUTE. THE SERIAL: CONSISTS OF ELEMENTS OF A MARCH COLUMN MOVING OVER THE SAME ROUTE. A SUBDIVISION OF THE COLUMN. THE MARCH UNIT: A SUBDIVISION OF THE SERIAL.
4
ELEMENTS OF A MARCH COLUMN ALL MARCH COLUMNS, REGARDLESS OF SIZE, HAVE THREE PARTS. EACH PART HAS A JOB TO DO. THE THREE PARTS ARE: –HEAD -THE HEAD IS THE FIRST TASK VEHICLE OF THE COLUMN IN THE ORDER OF MARCH. –MAIN BODY -THE MAIN BODY FOLLOWS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PACE SETTER. –TRAIL -THE TRAIL IS THE LAST ELEMENT OF A MARCH COLUMN.
5
CONVOY IDENTIFICATION ALL CONVOYS MUST HAVE A CONVOY CLEARANCE NUMBER. –THIS NUMBER MUST BE SHOWN BY THE CONVOY DURING THE ENTIRE MOVEMENT. –PLACE THE NUMBER ON BOTH SIDES OF ALL THE VEHICLES. WHEN SPACE IS AVAILABLE, IT SHOULD ALSO BE PLACED ON THE FRONT OF ALL VEHICLES IN THE CONVOY.
6
CHECKPOINTS, HALTS, & MAINTENANCE CHECKPOINTS ALONG THE ROUTE HELP CONTROL CONVOY MOVEMENT. –IF YOU HAVE TO HALT THE CONVOY, USE THE CHECKPOINTS AS REFERENCE POINTS IN REPORTING YOUR LOCATION. HALTS ARE MADE FOR REST, PERSONAL COMFORT AND RELIEF, MESSING, REFUELING, MAINTENANCE & INSPECTION OF EQUIPMENT. MAINTENANCE EN ROUTE OF CONVOY VEHICLES IS NO SMALL MATTER. TOO MANY BREAKDOWNS WILL DISRUPT THE ENTIRE CONVOY OPERATION. THE DRIVER ALWAYS PERFORMS NORMAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AT HALTS. HE DOES THOSE THINGS HE IS TRAINED TO DO SUCH AS: CHANGING TIRES, TIGHTENING BOLTS, AND CLEANING.
7
DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY DRIVERS RESPONSIBILITIES IN A CONVOY ARE AS FOLLOWS BUT NOT LIMITED TO: –ALWAYS FOLLOW CIVILIAN POLICE INSTRUCTIONS, TRAFFIC SIGNALS, AND ROAD SIGNS. –DO NOT STAND ON TRAFFIC SIDE OF A CONVOY HALT. –PERFORM VEHICLE OPERATIONS MAINTENANCE AND CHECK CARGO SECURITY AT EVERY HALT. –MOVE VEHICLES OFF HIGHWAY BEFORE BEGINNING MAINTENANCE.
8
–BEGIN CONVOY MOVEMENT ONLY ON COMMANDERS SIGNAL. –FOLLOW VEHICLE SPEED RESTRICTIONS SET BY CONVOY COMMANDER. – KEEP VEHICLE INTERVALS (MINIMUMS): CONTROLLED-ACCESS HWY---- 200 YARDS RURAL CONVENTIONAL HWY--- 150 YARDS URBAN CONVENTIONAL HWY--- 50 YARDS –MAINTAIN CLOSE INTERVAL UNTIL REACHING MAIN CONVOY ROUTE. –GRADUALLY ATTAIN PROPER VEHICLE INTERVAL ONCE ON MAIN CONVOY ROUTE. DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY
9
–TAKE A MINIMUM OF 8 HOURS REST WITHIN 12 HOURS OF DEPARTURE. –IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT, MAIN COLUMN DOES NOT STOP TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE. NEXT FOLLOWING VEHICLE PROVIDES IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE TO ACCIDENT VEHICLE. –IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS TO VEHICLE AHEAD, MAKE MAXIMUM EFFORT TO CLEAR TRAFFIC LANES. –OPERATE ALL VEHICLES WITH HEADLIGHTS ON AT ALL TIMES. DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY
10
NIGHT DRIVING TO SHOW THE LOCATION OF VEHICLES DURING BLACKOUT CONDITIONS, MILITARY VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH FOUR BLACK OUT MARKER LIGHTS (OTHERWISE REFERRED TO AS CAT EYES) A BLACKOUT DRIVING LIGHT IS MOUNTED TO THE LEFT OF THE HEAD LIGHT. IT FURNISHES A DIFFUSED LIGHT BEAM FOR LIMITED ILLUMINATION WHEN DRIVING UNDER BLACKOUT CONDITIONS. IN BLACKOUT CONDITIONS, VEHICLES WILL MAINTAIN A SPEED OF 5 TO 10 MPH. STAY ALERT AT ALL TIMES. FOLLOW ALL CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS GIVEN DURING THE CONVOY OR MISSION BRIEFING.
