Shell Eco-Marathon Competition Annual Shell-sponsored event 30 th anniversary of Shell Eco–Marathon in Europe Shell Eco-Marathon Americas has had growing participation in recent years
3
Shell encourages students to create and utilize designs that could potentially increase fuel efficiency in commercial vehicles Next Shell Eco-Marathon Americas competition: April 9-12, 2015 Expect over 5,000 students from around the world to participate this year
4
Design and build a small fuel-efficient vehicle and use it to compete in the Shell Eco- Marathon competition in April, 2015 Vehicle must be designed and built to meet specified design requirements and engineering specifications
5
Design Requirements: ◦ Four wheels ◦ Enclosed cab with windshield ◦ Functioning door ◦ Space inside for driver and luggage ◦ Head lights, tail lights, brake lights Engineering Specifications ◦ Specified spatial dimensions (length, width, height) ◦ Maximum weight ◦ Required turning radius ◦ Average speed requirements
6
The following subsystems must all be considered ◦ Frame ◦ Power source and fuel type ◦ Power transmission system and gearing ◦ Body ◦ Steering ◦ Brakes ◦ Wheels and tires ◦ Suspension ◦ Electrical systems ◦ Safety
7
For each subsystem, it is necessary to consider the following: ◦ Design alternatives ◦ Analyzing and select the best alternative ◦ Components ◦ Materials ◦ Cost ◦ Practicality ◦ Integration into other subsystems
8
Break the project down into manageable phases Develop a schedule to stay on-track First build a “mock” version of the frame and make necessary modifications to this Proceed to the construction of the real vehicle
9
The project can be broken down into phases: ◦ Conceptualize ◦ Design ◦ Build ◦ Test ◦ Compete Each phase plays an equally important role in the scheme of the entire project

Frame design modeled in Creo Constructed version 1 of our “mock” frame Currently modifying the trial frame to find a workable design Working on detailed engineering of other systems (clutch assembly, brakes, gearing, steering, etc.)

Learning how to efficiently manage several tasks simultaneously Has taught me to identify sources where I can find assistance (textbooks, professors, university staff, other students, etc.) This project teaches practical application –- book-knowledge is being applied to a real- world situation
