2 Personal Space The space which everyone needs for him/herself and his/her belongings Too many people living in a small home means not enough private space Furniture arrangement can create a sense of personal space in a shared room

3 Shared Space Family space is shared when it is used by more than one person The best way to manage shared space is to plan a schedule for use Living space is invaded when a family member enters or searches another persons space Sharing a room can teach shared responsibility which helps in other relationships

4 Space Organization The key to organizing space is to group like items together A good first step is to organize the items in a room, then find containers to store them in Efficient storage keeps frequently used items easily accessible

5 Scaled Floor Plans When drawing a scaled floor plan, remember to use the same scale for furniture and the room Scaled floor plans can help arrangement of furniture Large pieces of furniture should be arranged first

6 Traffic Pattern Traffic pattern is the path that people walk through a room Ideally people do not have to weave in and out around the furniture in a room or have a tight squeeze between furniture

7 Fire Safety Plan and practice TWO escape routes in case of a fire If a person catches on fire, they should Stop, Drop, and Roll Smoke detectors should be placed at each level of the home

8 Home Safety Falling is the most common cause of fatal home accidents Medicines and poisons should be kept out of reach of children, behind locked doors Most home poisonings involve young children Poisonous items should be kept in original containers

9 Electrical Safety To avoid electrical shock, unplug electrical appliances before cleaning them Make sure hands are dry when using electrical appliances Cords that are cut &/or have exposed wires should be replaced before use

10 Home Security Security systems call local emergency numbers if a burglar tries to enter the house Special monitors in the hallways and lobby can help people that live in apartments feel safe from break-ins

11 Smart House Automation such as central on/off systems for lights
